Time Capsule from PoE Closed Beta -- a classic PoE vs D3 thread circa 2012
" I'm not quoting your entire posting - too long :-) And I don't think it's being nitpicky. I think it lays the finger on a wound called "willing suspension of disbelief". Tell us that someone can make a ball of fire with his mind and toss it at an enemy. It's magic! And we're willing for the sake of the game or story to say: "Sure, go ahead. Sounds snazzy!" But if you tell us that a crossbow fires rockets or upwards of 200 bolts per second, we're shaking our head and say "Nuh-huh. Now you're making shoot up!" Because one of those things is impossible, and the other is merely very improbable. Plus: Our imaginative worlds have to have rules, internal consistency. Even magics have to have a system by which they are governed. Otherwise you can pretty much justify anything by "a wizard did it". And if you use "real" weapons in very unconvincing ways, this, too, has to be justified. And they way Blizzard does this is: "Well, it's cool, so just nod." And for some of us, this is not enough. I get that more and more things Blizzard designs only revolve around "Rule Of Cool", and that they don't give a flying frittata about how consistent it is in their own game world. Of course they're sort-of-explaining how their skills etc. are "possible" -but that's where my willing suspension of disbelief falters: Their justifications just do not come across as very believable in my eyes. 12/12/12 - the day Germany decided boys are not quite human. Ok, one last post.
Well how many people questioned the amazon's ability to shoot dozens of arrows in one shot. Was that ever given proper explanation? Perhaps they do go by the 'rule of cool', but if they do, they've been doing it since diablo 2. ''Stand amongst the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters. The silence is your answer.'' IGN: Vaeralyse Last edited by Tagek#6585 on Apr 19, 2012, 6:44:15 PM

"Making shoot up" !?!??!?!
I am in awe of that. Account sharing/boosting is a bannable offence. No ifs, ands, or buts.

" The Diablo coming back in D2 was acceptable, but he was supposed to be dead after D2. If he just keeps coming back it doesn't really motivate the player, story wise. " Over and over. It's also a female Diablo this time. Last edited by xxnoob#7582 on Apr 19, 2012, 6:59:13 PM

" Willing suspension can be stretched. We've seen Legolas shoot multiple arrows in one shot. We can see how Strafe works with inhumanly fast drawing speed. Because a bow can be shot as fast as it can be drawn: One motion that pulls an arrow from your quiver, lays it on the string, pulls it, and lets fly. This stretches suspension of disbelief for me, but it works since my toon is a hero. He can do those things faster and more accurately than any human could. But crossbows have to be re-drawn between shots with both hands and with serious downtime (either by winch or by setting them on the ground, putting your foot in the stir-up and pulling the string up). Thus continuously firing two mini-crossbows as if they were both a pumpgun with incredible spread and akimbo UZIs at the same time: This is where my willing suspension of disbelief fractures. I think it may well be the fact that Blizzard tries to merge gameplay with story. If they had kept that skill strictly to gameplay, I'd probably have been fine with it. Heck, I didn't mind using Multiple Arrows with crossbows in D2. By the way, the handbook explained it as "magically splitting the bolt after the shot". As I said: It's a fine line. Formerly, Blizzard was, to me, a master of tightroping that line. Recently, they come across more like a drunk clown swaying metres left and right, and landing right in "Narm" territory. edit@xxnoob's pic: Looks a lot like the Queen of Blades to me. And reminds me of the outcry when it became public knowledge that "omg, Diablo has a tail! You've ruined him forever!" 12/12/12 - the day Germany decided boys are not quite human. " Whoa, and a Six Feet Under/Nathan Fisher reference (which admittedly became a trope)?! You're on a freakin' roll, Avireyn. This thread has missed you. Oh, and I also agree with everything else you said. Account sharing/boosting is a bannable offence. No ifs, ands, or buts.

" tits? GTFO. Account sharing/boosting is a bannable offence. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Really hope diablo doesnt look like that, and that it's only a phase until he transforms in his true original form.

I don't really care. This is the first Diablo game where you can't kill him or her with Holy Bolt.
Tsk. Account sharing/boosting is a bannable offence. No ifs, ands, or buts.

" Nope, that's Diablo 3. Enjoy the hips of doom. |
