anything that helps me figure out this shaper/elder stuff is welcome.

to this day I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing with it...

Sure. Not an expert myself, but shaper/elder items have affixes only available to them, and some of them are very powerful for certain builds. To find out what you can chaos spam on them, google poeaffix. Simplest example is an ilvl 85+ shaper amulet, which can roll +10% quantity of items found.

Will we be able to get beastairy items from the stronghold?

Yeah, Bestiary is a past league, isn't it? :)
Wow I really like the idea of the strongholds! They seem to fit in perfectly in my mapping routine (doing a variety of maps and spawning elder guardins/killing elder).
El Psy Kongroo.
sounds interesting.

my incursion zana went 8 yesterday. yay, level 11 maps to buy some days before league end. i really did her quests regularily
age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!

i don't really understand the point of league-specific items, anymore. there are increasingly more and more ways to attain these, it seems to defeat the purpose of restricting them.

I agree and disagree at the same time. If we're talking about a Headhunter, in the past you'd be able to find it or chance it via Nemesis Zana device mod. In Incursion, they scrapped that and only made it available in the Temple via Storage room or Sacrifice room. I have chanced a Headhunter in Bestiary, while I was unable to get it in Incursion. Point is, through the map device there was no limit to the number of attempts, while in Incursion you have so few chances to actually get it, it's crazy.

Now they've removed the Temple temporarily, so the only places to get a Headhunter are 1) Shaper's Strongholds, 2) Reliquary (which will be stupidly rare) and 3) Somewhere deep within Delve, in certain bioms/cities, which might be rare and you can only do that city's delve once - then you have to search for that city again by moving sideways or deeper into the delve.

So I would say it is consistent, and depending on the drop rates, might be easier or harder to get a HH now. But it's more consistent now because you can get ALL league-specific items from the same places, including some league-specific items that couldn't drop before. I think it's a good balance.

So does it add anything interesting to maps? Because os far the rewards sound like ass as usual.

What kind of rewards would be not-ass? You got so burnt out that nothing less than a guaranteed exalt drop makes you excited to play? Consider taking a break.
Finally something good.
My atlas with 5 sextants was soooooo empty.

Fine with strongholds being in yellow maps.. Red maps? no.. It is hard enough to get red maps to drop for just completion, but now we have to complete 4 strongholds on red maps just for randomly spawned strongholds? screw that.
Unless they change how maps drop, this only benefits the top 1% who can get all the red maps to drop. I never have completed every non unique map on the dam atlas so this is going to be impossible.

Top 1% of players only able to get red maps done? I seriously doubt this made-up statistic.
In my first league of playing PoE, I've closed all red maps with ease within like a month. I don't understand the issue - if you get the same red maps to drop, go to /trade 820, type WTT your map, your map, your map FOR X map Y map Z map. You can also use Horizon Orbs if you feel lucky.

If your concern is 'but man red maps just don't drop!', then this is simply false. I've done a shaped atlas strategy, and over-sustained maps to the point of selling T16s on a regular basis, and that was done with a lower atlas % bonus than you would have if you were trying to close all red maps, which is what will probably be the new thing - or at least initially to get the 4 strongholds down. Those will be easy too, since I doubt they'd spawn on maps you haven't yet completed and are harder for you to drop.
