Just going to flat out say it: The art assets in this game are not up to quality

Also I would just like too point out that despite the issues with not being able to tone them down for some of you with performance reasons this game has by far one of the best spell effect engines I have seen.

Fire looks like fire, and my god the frost effects are beautiful...

Chin up GGG the game could use some improvements especially in area's of high end gear art assets and animation but we don't all think you have done a bad job. I think this game is beautiful.

(especially with some forced ambient occlusion ;)
Actually I should put up a real screen of it running on my machine on max detail...

It seems the majority of the complaint's are coming from people who prefer the cartoon art styles. It's a shame the industry and companies like blizzard, and console orientation of the gaming world and have helped too create these people.

I miss realistic graphics dammit!

To Crazyfingers619,

I'm not sure what you consider to be " up to quality" but I have to say the game looks pretty good considering it is being developed by a small, independent team. I'm not sure what you were looking for when you decided to try this game out, but POE isn't Crysis 3 man. Yeah, the devs may not have used the latest Unreal, Cryengine or Red engines for this game but it still has very good aesthetics for the type of game it is. This is a independent, hack N slash, overhead RPG, not a major budget, made-for-console franchise title. This game beats the shit out of any other games I've played in its genre, such as Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3 in almost every way possible, including the overall mechanics, art and even most animations in my opinion, and I've beaten the hell out of the ladder mentioned games. Also, try to remember the game is still in a beta stage of development. I've read many responses by the devs to feedback and it appears they still have a lot planned for POE when it comes to the overall art, effects and animation qualities of the game so maybe you should wait on the finished product before making such a complete and harsh judgment.

Now then, a note to the Path of Exile developers. Keep up the good work and don't be discouraged by the few tasteless trolls that rear their ugly heads. I imagine half of them know as much about the development of a game as they do about solving the Goldbach Conjecture.

Lastly, to Crazyfingers619, don't be this guy -

Respect the hard work it takes to develop an original, independent game and just leave quietly if you can't appreciate it.

-Edit-
To anyone who thinks I may not know what I'm talking about, check out my texture and mesh works I made for Skyrim awhile back. My work isn't much I know, but it will at least show I have some experience in the difficulties of creating art for a game.

The troll you linked is well modeled, well textured, and has character to it, it's 100% out of the realm of art this game exhibits. I'm not trying to troll, i tried to make a point. I will admit i could have gone about it better, i will not admit the point didn't need to be made.

edit: I will even admit that the artistry and craft in teh above troll exceeds my own abilities. This is the quality of art that deserves to be in this amazing game.

When did criticizing a games art direction and assets become trolling?

Other than the technical issues and low level combat, it's clear to people that don't just stay in the vacuum of this forum that the graphics and art of POE is seen as a detriment to many people trying the game. I played a lot of D2 and so the thing that keeps me coming back is the depth of the skill tree and crafting/orbing. But a lot of people that missed D2 may skip this game based on first impressions. I actually tried the game twice in CB and quit around Brutus as I wasn't having fun.

When I offer criticism of parts of the game it's with the hope that they will eventually fix these issues and make the game better. I'm not sure how long I'm going to stick with the game as it stands. I'd love to have a game to last me as long as D2 did.

If you are already in the career you must already have a online portfolio somewhere ready for job. Since you suggest that taking feedback is important, I think that you are not the type of person to be afraid to show everyone your work?

I meant professional stuff tho, not your average deviantArt quality stuff.

why is this important??

Seriously... I am artists too...I don't want to be compared with GGG artists.. I believe they are talented and everything.. But I also feel something is fishy with art direction. I think, as guy, who is dealing with art every single day, I can say what I feel is wrong with art..It's something what typical Joe can't say because he doesn't understand exactly what can make art unpleasant. There are many people who don't make movies, or write books but they watched so many movies that they can easily say why book or movie sucked.

I respect these people..because in movies and books I am that average Joe.. I don't know why I didn't like that movie..I just didn't.. But this guy can tell me, what I may felt and where the execution wasn't good.

This is how I feel.. Maybe I don't have the best art ..or even better than GGG artists, but I believe I know about the art enough, that I may help with my opinion and that I can point on flaws..which average Joe can't understand why is a flaw..he just see it as flaw too.

Yeah, the previous quote by you would be considered trolling. You once again just hacked away at the art and designs that the devs are so fervently working on without a second thought. Where is the "constructive criticism" here? I really, really wish the forum moderators would just completely remove this thread. Its useless on about every level... Too many complaints and not enough on what people are actually wanting the devs to do about it all. Please moderators, for all our sakes, just obliterate this thread from the face of the web.

y im slept?
We need to bash and whip him so that he works harder and better, but not hard enough so he falls over and dies.

On a positive note, I watched a gameplay trailer way, way back and I couldn't figure out if it was actually game play or pre-rendered. I thought the shadows and all that kind of jazz was some magic out of this world. That being said, I hope there'll be plenty of more fluff when it comes to the art.

So this just confirms that you like cartoon graphics. Got it.

The difference here is, we are saying we like the art the way it is, and you are coming along with your nose in the air telling us why we shouldnt like it, and why it should be changed to your liking.

Your right, I don't know art.....but I know I like POE and its style. And would not like the changes you are suggesting, and really don't like the art examples you posted....at all.

So again, I aks you stop trying to interpret for us, we like POEs artstyle, we don't like yours. It's pretty cut and dry.
