I really love the 2d art of the armor and weapons for what its worth but the way its implemented into 3d looks pretty stale i have to say. Save a few armors and weapons the pieces tend to just kind of droop on your characters. I think that GGG has some real creativity in their art department but i do agree with op in the regards that some of it isnt being done in the most quality fashion. As someone who does a good bit of modeling for my job i can totally empathize and I really think the art team has done a magnificent job with how little they have had to work with up to this point. The good thing is that the art team is only going to get better as they keep developing the game and im confident that it will look significantly better in 2 years. Keep in mind blizzard has 10x plus the assets when it comes to artists and resources like that. I think this game is really beautiful in some ways its only a matter of time until all of it is up to par.

Some miexd opinions going on in this tread. The op may has started this discusion too harsh, but generaly its not a bad idea to criticise the graphical aspects of the game.
Personaly i love the artstyle and it should be clear to everyone, that the art will further improve in time.
sure the Exiles are lacking polygons and it would be a big improvement, but the devs know better what to prioritise.
Path Of Exile wants so be different, its taking the old path of a great idea that hasnt evolved much since. its quite brave these days, doing something different in the aera of the sheeps.
I don't think polies have much to do with the art issues. It's really just the texturing of the polies they have that's to blame. It's why I feel a game with fewer polies, Titan Quest, does a much better job in terms of a similar art style of this game.

I don't really have any specific problems with things such as 'low res' but more with stylistic things. I don't like the majority of the act 3 outdoor maps (city of sarn, sarn slums, warehouses, marketplace). It's mostly the colors that bother me, the beige-lightbrown'ish hue that makes up the terrain and buildings aren't appealing to me, especially when most contrast is just done with darker/lighter shades of brown. I understand that the structures are mostly sandstone in nature but I would like to see more difference both in terrain and structure color, right now if you look at the terrain or a building it's the exact same color on the left as on the right as in the middle as on top.
Beyond league.

I personally think people need to get out of the D3 mindset of "Criticize everything and make sure the developers know we hate them" and instead use constructive criticism. The title of this topic is just insulting.

The difference here is, we are saying we like the art the way it is, and you are coming along with your nose in the air telling us why we shouldnt like it, and why it should be changed to your liking.
Your right, I don't know art.....but I know I like POE and its style. And would not like the changes you are suggesting, and really don't like the art examples you posted....at all.
So again, I aks you stop trying to interpret for us, we like POEs artstyle, we don't like yours. It's pretty cut and dry.
I didn't post anything.. I think you are confusing our names :)..
I just have to say I agree with him partially. It's okey you like their art..it's your opinion. Like he has his own opinion and I have mine. I just believe that current art overall is just acceptable ..but not good or great..there are parts I love a lot..but overall, there are some basic mistakes in current Art direction. At least it's based on my own experience, on my knowledge. For example textures has too much details for isometric view. It looks pretty good on static picture, or when not much is happening on the screen, but it looks very noise and unpleasant for many when there is a lot of motion on the screen..
Focusing more on macro-details and soften micro-details would do the job.. I would like to point on HoN for example (if you know it)..they have cartoon graphics and everything..but ignore this and look what they have done in HoN 3.0 with textures. THey had really nice and very very detailed textures..these textures looked really good..but for fast gameplay, these were just distracting and many people didn't liked the look of hon but they didn't know why.. In HoN 3.0, they reworked textures..textures have very soft micro details but still enough these bigger details, which can stand out..on static picture it doesn't tell you much but during gameplay...it's soooooo much easier to looking at monitor than before. and it just looks better.
same with monsters.. for isometric and fast game is very important to not blend action with background..and this is exactly what is happening in PoE. I don't want to bring D2 or D3 on the table..but for example..in D3..in any area, during the big fights, unless there are some absurd particle effects, I clearly see what is happening on the screen. I see spells, monsters, my character, action is fast and readable ..very important.. In PoE for example fighting bandits, apes and golems in crossroad..well..let's say in big fights I don't see a shit.. I see just very noisy brownish mess on the screen. Game is really unreadable. Of course...for many it's not a big deal.. They don't care much about look..and they can clear tons of mobs in two seconds..so what was just noisy in one second..in the next..everything is fine and dandy..but it's not okey..that fight alone doesn't look good..even when it's very short.
I don't want to make this game cartoony at all..everything I wrote about could be achieved even in more realistic stylization.. I just would love, if game would be more easily readable. Gameplay is important of course.. but I care about look.

He likes cartoons and thinks it's a good choice for video game art. It's obvious especially after the comment about the troll which I think is damn ugly looking.
but TBH..that troll looks like better version of any monster they have right now in the game.. it fits the style and it's not really bad..it would look great from isometric perspective imho
+1 for understanding Game Art. Glad to finally hear someone say this, hopefully it'll help others understand what this thread was supposed to be about from the start. Little criticism never hurt anyone, at least in the art field.... haha

For me, the effects+textures and monsters+characters and items just dont fit each other, first one is so phantasy, is like a jrpg, second is the best one i think,or at least the one i liked more, and the characters and skins... this looks pretty bad i'm sorry, desproportional characters, endgame items that makes you look like a homeless or a rookie... items that dont fit each others and look like you are in some weird carnaval.
So there is 3 cores on the artstyle, the core 1 and 2 are breaking the atmosphere because they dont fit, and the core 3 is simply bad.
Sorry for my english dudes! D:

Sometimes the truth hurts. The art assets and direction need a LOT of work.

Agreed, I don't want to piss on anyone's Corn Flakes but the overall art design of gear is extremely boring IMO.

Ugh, this thread is still at the top, I'm going to delete it tomorrow, I just wanted to say one last thing to whoever may be keeping up with this thread. The original tone and content of this post was totally uncalled for... going through a rough patch, but that's no excuse for me to take it out on others online. Sorry again for the mess.
Edit:Didn't realize posters lacked deletion functions. I'd personally like to delete the thread or have it locked but whatever's clever with the mods.
