I understand that new things are going first to the alpha testers to clear out the biggest problems and flaws, so that beta testers can more focus on balance things etc etc. Thats completely fine and understandable.
What i don't understand is, the way it's handled. Complete embargo on everything. I would understand embargo for public, but what is the point on being totally secret, no screens, no videos, no this or no that even for beta testers? This is what i don't understand. |

The alpha testers don't even get to see what GGG is working on until it's in a certain state. The same reasoning probably applies between alpha and beta; it'll be shown once they're content that its current state is what they want people seeing.
I would gladly share screenshots from the alpha, but we've been told strictly not to do so. Even if we were allowed, they would probably still require us to ask permission for each pic, and that process would just take time from GGG's work. Honestly, I think the main reason we haven't seen any new teasers is that they just haven't found the time to make them, as it's probably not much of a priority compared to all the other projects the have going on. Chris says they're coming, so someone is/will be working on them. Closed Beta/Alpha Tester back after a 10-year hiatus.

But thats partly my point. Why would alphas need permission to show screenshot to betas? Alphas need to test the game before betas, as i said, that is perfectly fine and correct and for greater good of everyone. But why cant alphas at least post some screenshots? That wouldn't hurt anyone. With permissions, it would hurt GGG, because it would take some time from them, but my point is, there is no need for permissions between alphas and betas showing of some screenshots.
But ok, nevermind. Last edited by Molda#3506 on Oct 30, 2011, 5:53:34 PM

I'm not saying you're wrong, or that there's anything wrong with beta testers seeing some of the alpha. I suppose GGG just doesn't want it that way, and I assume they have good reasons.
Maybe they're worried about media getting leaked. The entire beta community isn't exactly 100% trustworthy, after all. Some have already shown they don't care about GGG's wishes in various ways (things like selling keys). Closed Beta/Alpha Tester back after a 10-year hiatus.

Yeah, you are propably right about possible leaks. So its safest the way it is right now.

Just to give you an insight into what is going on in alpha, there have been nine pre 0.9.3 versions to date (0.9.3alpha1, 0.9.3alpha2, etc), some being quite specific in intent and direction.
Rest assured, like a duck on a pond, things may appear quiet on the surface, but plenty is happening "below the waterline". There are many new things being introduced as well as tuning of existing systems. This inevitably leads to stuff becoming broken and new bugs rearing their heads. As WhiteBoy88 says we need to help GGG get this thing to a state where they are happy to bring it into the beta realm and get all you guys involved in the feedback loop. I used to be apathetic, now I just don't care.

The reason why we embargoed the Alpha information was not to do with new content, but because we didn't want crazily buggy screenshots getting out and confusing people. Alpha is often a wasteland of broken experimental content. We've deployed versions with several known crashes and very embarassing problems. It's nice to know that we don't have to waste time polishings these things prior to getting feedback.
Having said that, I am 100% happy with screenshots of the current Alpha build (with the exception of the passive skills tree currently - sorry) getting posted to the Beta forum if we approve them. Alpha testers: feel free to PM/mail me pictures if you want approval. Beta testers: I am very very sorry for this huge delay between patches. It was a massive planning mistake and I take full responsibility and will make sure that it never happens again. Once 0.9.3 is deployed, there will be a patch every few days for the rest of the life of Path of Exile. There will never again be a period of months without updates! | |
Good news and good update, Chris.
