A Cold Crit Witch Guide 2.0 (RE-DONE!) Check it out!

Thanks alot for this guide shibloble! It´s a great starting point for us new players, very educational and to the point. I found the info scattered around the forums quite hard to grasp (with loads of unknown acronyms) and sometimes very contradictory.

While I understand that it comes natural in a game like this with lots of different playstyles and builds, it´s nice to have a fallback guide to make sure you´re not wasting your skillpoints totally :)

What are the support gems you're using with your active skill gems?

i found this guide very helpfull and i'd like to thank you for the time invested in this, it helped me alot even at high level altho i wish i had seen it sooner as i was confused in the begining.

some things i'd like to add are:

Haste - is a very good aura, its a main aura actually, specially if you play in a group, i would take it over anything depending on how you are either with mana or es, it also benefits the entire group, as where mana regen or es might not. (haste gives cast speed and movement speed), i think you should include it in your guide.

also i believe ice spear is far supperior to pulse, i was amazed when i swapped those and started playing with the shards, the dmg is lower yes, but the fact that it crits alot makes up for it, also scales well with crit dmg support gem (use crit % for another skill)
it also allows you to keep your distance and i havent died once since i started using it, oneshots any non rare while farming docks for instance, also killing mobs outside your screen. Also with pulse i had alot of problems with mobs not taking dmg correctly, not beeing able to dmg thrugh doors, mobs near walls not taking the dmg, and probably countless mobs not taking dmg from all mult projectiles, taking dmg from maybe only 1 or 2. I personally was convinced pulse was better and used it up to lvl 70, but its not.

another good combo i think is arc with the totem, adding item quantity or quality if you have, and probably the best skill for soloing endgame maps with this build would be conversion trap, it mind controlls ANYTHING cept the bosses (the orange coloured ones), and in those maps every boss room contains about 8 rares...its just a blast seeing them kill eachother, plus it provides with tanking mobs, also giving you auras they might have and what not.
I know this is a starters/basic guide, but these skills can be usefull in the same way at lower levels to, plus personally i feel like a beginner even in endgame and got tons of questions unanswered.

oh and as a con to CI, when i 1st started playing i was sure i would use it, i picked it up and noticed that the passive should say something more like this, "chaos dmg now does dmg to es" or smthin, having ci doesnt rly make you imune to the dmg, it makes the dmg no longer chaos, but normal, so you can still die from mobs that use chaos dmg, i think it should only be picked up if the gear you have happens to not have much hp.

I agree with the ice spear theory, I use it on my totem with GMP and im perma freezing everything and have been for some time. the 600% inc crit chance makes it far superior IMO.

I'm kind of curious too what some people are using for their support gems. I'm using a combo of the following main skills. Freezing Pulse, Ice Spear, and Cold Snap for damage. I also use Frostbite for cursing regularly.

Now that i'm just getting into the "Support Gem" area at mid level 30's I'm wondering what others are using?

So far I've got "Lesser Multiple Projectiles" (LMP) on Freezing Pulse. I've got an "Increased Critical Damage" (ICD) on Ice Spear, and nothing on Cold Snap yet.

Currently I'm faced with the choice of taking "Cold Penetration" or another "Increased Critical Damage" gem.

I feel like the fact that I need to Crit to get benefit out of the ICD gem I might be better off going with "Cold Penetration". However, keeping Cold Penetration and LMP on Freezing Pulse will quickly cause it to be a Mana Sink (At least at my current level).

On the flip side of that I'm thinking that ICD will work with any spells, and potentially give me more bang for the buck out of the crits to come later as i get more passives into Crits and Crit Damage. Fireball as a backup skill could Benefit from being linked to it.

Also, can you stack multiple ICD gems onto a single skill if you have double links going to the single skill gem? For Example: Can I link two ICD to a Freezing Pulse or an Ice Spear and get a stacking effect out of both being linked?

I am playing the same way you are right now, Ice Spear, Freezing Pulse, and Cold Snap. I am on Hardcore and only 28, don't have much playing time and taking things slow.

For FP, I use LMP and saw a huge boost in damage. I also have it linked with Faster Projectiles and it helps even more. These 2 are must haves with Freezing Pulse. Your next Support gem should be Faster Projectiles, IMO.

As far as IS, I don't have any gems for them yet, so I can't provide much feedback.

But for sure, get Faster Projectiles. Big improvement. With these 3 though, you will want to run Clarity in order to support your mana consumption.
Freezing pulse - LMP/GMP and Faster projectiles are the two you must have on it, fourth can be whatever you like really, cold pen works well if you don't use curses.

Ice spear - Faster projectiles, improved crit damage, LMP/GMP, totem, faster casting.

Cold snap I don't use, see no point in using it IMO.

Reduced mana on Clarity, Discipline and a defensive aura will be your other four link, I usually use purity depending on gear.

Also on the point you guys were making Ice spear is arguably better but only at range where the near constant crits do huge amounts of damage which is why it's often put onto a totem. Pulse is your real go to DPS skill for most things because it fires off so fast and it cuts through groups.

Crits quite often, it's used mostly as a "nuke" when you are running, mostly for when the enemy has ES and you don't want it to regen.

Yeah I usually have Ice spear on totem so don't have to worry about ES regen, I can see how it could have some small use before 31 though.

I don't use totems, at least not yet. I don't have the gear to support an icespear totem right now (cant find/roll a red socket)

Without totem, cold snap helps, it also does some fair damage.

Hi! I'm a real nOOb here and I'm no good with the character building at all. Can you give me some advice about the build I had in mind? I'd like to do a crit/fire witch, with some summoner bonus.

That is my idea, yet unifinished so that I can add all the essential things I've surely missed, according to your experience. I'm really very low in the game, so I am still in time to do a lot of corrections.

Please help me, any response will be greatly appreciated =)
