[1.1.5]PewPewPews Cheap Starter Friendly Surge Trapper | Working on 1.3!

Hi sir Pewpewpew, I plan on playing this build tomorrow (been wanting to play a trapper forever). This is my current gear i've managed to put together, should I change anything in particular? I don't have all the gems/item links set up yet but that will be done later.

Spoiler
Seems rather solid. Though, you do realise that the Doriyani's leech does not affect us? Since we are using traps, the traps are the ones dealing damage, not us, thus the leech goes to the traps(which are, by that time, broken, but oh well).

Other than that, it should be fine. If you are undercapped on res though, you could consider changing the jaws to a shield with HP and Res.

I probably need to shave a couple of points but this was what I was looking at for 1.2:

Any feedback would be appreciated. I'm mainly wondering if it's worth it to try and spec into shield nodes or am I just wasting points I could spend better on more life/damage/crit?

Thanks!

Losing out on clever constructions(traps can't be destroyed for 5 seconds after they are thrown)will be a hell in certain maps(burning/chaos ground)/vs certain mobs(fire/chaos lobbers, evangelists etc). I believe even projectiles can destroy your traps, so extra projectile/chaining will also be really hard on you.

If you are going for clever constructions, High explosives is an easy damage increase - even though it might be less important with the lower res on mobs - so you might want to pick that one up as well while you are near it.

You can chose to pick those two up instead of Heart of Flames/Breathe of Flames, but that will result in a good dps drop.

Honestly, I wouldn't go for block, even though you are wearing a shield. Thanks to the way the build is set up, you will barely ever stand still and soak up damage. The 60-70 block you have will help tremendously when you are often in melee range, or standing still for longer periods of time. But since we are moving a lot, it shouldn't be that big for us.

Iron Reflexes + Grace might be more to your liking in this case. Especially since you are only 5 points away. The defence it gives will most likely mitigate 20 - 30% of all the physical damage you take. The rest of the points should go into damage.

I wouldn't go heavily for crit. This build is not optimized to work with the Jaws of Agony's power charge generation.

Thanks for the help, I think you're probably right about the shield nodes. I'll see if I can spec out of them and pick up clever construction.
Hey PewPewPew,

Let me know what you think of this build!

I opted for as much elemental or fire damage as possible to increase my burn. 20% chance to ignite from tree, 44% from chance to ignite gem, and 10% from quality increased burning damage comes out to 74% chance to ignite.

I grabbed all the AOE nodes I could as well.

The curse nodes are because I will be the primary curser for my little group of 3. Plan on using Curse on Hit + shockwave totem for AOE 3 curses (5 link). When/if I get a 6 link, I would swap to trap + ice nova + curse on hit + 3 curses. Curses will be flammability, elemental weakness, and vulnerability.

I plan on using a Cloak of Defiance and Arctic Armor (+56% mana, Eldritch Battery, 100% mana regen).

My question is... will this be sufficient durability in beyond?
Problem is, I don't know how strong the portal mobs will be. Thanks to the burning, it should be rather easy for you to take them down.

It should work, but I feel 143% life is just on the edge. If you really want to be save, pick up athleticism instead of shaper/Ash, Frost, Storm(make sure to pick up elementalist among the way as well).

I modified your tree a bit:

What do you whink about?

I dropped some fire dmg nod, but get 45% DoT (Entropy - 3 points), and Holy fire with extra ignite chance. I lost energy shield, but won that extra dmg over time boost.

I want to start with this build after patch, but i don't know what better for me, the extra dmg over time, or more dmg to surge.. :/

I climb to the end of cruel act3 with a fire trapper, and it did not use surge trap, just fire traps, with lgt-multi trap-ele prolif support. And bear trap with added fire dmg. (Fastly moving enemys were still pain in the ass.)

I want to change my build to that fire trap + fire surge version, or probably will use fire trap + trap triggered poison arrow. That's why i'm thinking on pure DoT nods.

What do you think?

Another question: what do you think about Vaal Discipline - that grants you same extra ES in extreme situations.

I would rather do this.

Just a bit more es + lig res this way.

I'm not against going with poison traps, but remember, you need to equip a bow to do so, meaning you will lose the defences you get from your shield, and will be stuck with bow/quiver mods, which will mostly be useless for you. Losing stats from both weapon and shield will hurt you in the long run, and makes your fire traps/surge traps much weaker.

Thanks PewPewPew, I think I will err on the side of caution and use your suggestion.

20% increased life is probably worth the lower elemental damage. Only thing is, I don't know how losing shaper will affect me. The life regen is so nice (no leech) and 40% mana might be required for AA.
