Oh, PLEASE... make selectively clicking on an enemy optional
This is a feature that would also help out melee without adding power to ranged characters. Keeping a constant flow of attacks without interruption from target switching would make life-steal a bit more reliable at keeping melee-ers alive.
The lack of usable UI is another drawback of what some are referring to as "true melee". IE: Skills that hit enemies *with the weapon* as opposed to skills that hit the enemy with an area band-selection. I rarely see anyone use the "single target" skills vs anything other than single high-hp targets. In Diablo2 there were many "single-target" melee skills that were viable for use against groups of enemies (although admittedly usually still less powerful than the typical AOE spam). Concentrate, Frenzy, Berserk, Jab were all workable. In addition, all the "high attack rate" skills had *special automatic target selection* right from day 1. Zeal, Fend, Fury, etc. Would choose their own next target if the current one died. Imagine trying to use ZEAL without this? You get 5 attacks from your skill and your target dies on swing 3... uh oh. You now have .1 second to click another monster. Is a dual wield dualist with frenzy charges really such a different beast? I say, nope. Getting some UI lovin' would be a step towards making more builds "playable", at least from a quality of life standpoint. |

Another patch, another letdown, continued inability to play a melee character.

I really want to play melee, but missile has the advantage of being able to click behind, slightly in front of, or in the general direction and still hit the enemy while melee often swings in the air at any enemy that slightly moves. I also find my melee characters balking in their attacks with only half the animation going and then quitting. On my ranger I can even kill enemies completely out of visibility by shooting in the direction of their shadow or just guessing where they may be, never clicking on them. On my witch it is the same thing. Why should I play melee? I really want to I am more of a melee fan, but I find melee broken in comparison to ranged characters which allow me to be way more efficient. I progress way faster on those characters.
I was surprised when I asked this in chat and the only answer was try holding down shift... " This is a clear disadvantage in both PVE and PVP. I don't even want to try PVP with melee as a result. I am not sure what the answer to the problem should be, but it is clear to me as melee is at such a disadvantage compared to range it is not worth playing for me. And this is especially true on laptops with no mouse. Please fix this somehow. I do not think this has anything to do with difficulty when other classes are not disposed to the same problem. " Yep. Sadly, this solution is unreliable at best, as attacks that are not name-locked rarely connect. I'm (trying) to play a dual-wield dualist, and it's going rather poorly. I spend the majority of my time running circles around enemies as I repeatedly miss clicking on their tiny hitboxes. I avoid areas with the little monkeys. It turns into playing missile command trying to catch the little buggers. I'm worried that GGG's "solution" will be to give melee more AoE skills. I think this would be a mere side-step of the real issue. The game is already too dependent on Area Attacks as is. I'm hoping they prove me wrong. They seem pretty reasonable, so with any luck they'll look into UI work when the server stability and largest balance things are taken care of. |

This feature is sorely needed. Right now, playing melee is just a chore. Targeting enemies like the little spitters or the snakes is just a pain, and you are more fighting the UI than the actual mobs.
As for the "skill" required, this doesnt remove any interesting skill. To do well in the game, you'll still have to have proper positioning, build, reaction time, and so on. But when comes the time to finish the lesser mobs, you'll have a good time doing it. I mean, this is just good UI really. The previous very successful games in the genre had this feature for a reason. Last edited by ooIGGYoo#4405 on Apr 6, 2013, 10:02:01 PM

I know that this is a huge necro, but the issue still stands. Something needs to be done about this. If the single target targeting is improved, melee will be a delight to play instead of a chore. It will also help with the problem of the many missed swings when shift-attacking without having an enemy name-locked. There's really not much to say, the thread is comprehensive enough.

I have a better idea but it will never be implemented: keyboard movement. You can follow your target while aiming and attacking, you wont accidentally go somewhere you didn't intended. Try out a game like Bastion or Spiral Knights to see what I mean.

I contacted the devs and linked this thread and they are going to discuss the problem! Sweet! Let's hope it won't take too long before it is fixed :)

So.. any news on if any sort of right-click driving functionality is going to be added to the game?
All my builds have been on characters that use non targeted AoE skills because of my inability to constantly click on things due to RSI. I would really like to play the game the way I did in D2/D3 and play characters/builds I've wanted to all this time; but after 2 years I'm still unable to. I don't mean to sound rude, but I can't help the way people interpret my words.
