They have gotten less popular since their initial craze but are still just as powerful. It's probably the highest damage selfcast build that rivals the clearspeed of much more expensive builds.

Part of it is due to the amulet that let you discharge twice with 2 different elements being legacy. Remember back then the trap gem didn't even give increased damage and had an 8 second cooldown, while totems were everywhere. Now that spell echo is out and it doesn't work with discharge it's pretty balanced as a skill really.

Holy shit did you ever nail it, Kaysee. And you feel like a dick saying, 'but Daaaad you said we were going to the footy!' because, shit, it's a shiny new boat and at least he's not down the pub getting pissed with his mates.

Good read and certainly eye opening. I may not agree with everything that was said (and not siad) in your post, you absolutely have the right to be upset. Good, bad, or indifferent you certainly have supported this game much more than most and we are all better because of it. Sorry that you don't stick your nose in here more often as of late, but completely understandable.

GGG is a company and although they have made a super awesome game, it's their game. It's not like we got stock options when we bought supporter packs. They can take it in any direction they want to. I just hope they continue to listen to everyone and not pick and choose.

Sorry for Soul Mantle getting in the way of your movement plans somewhat, but I suspect that, given the many other ways to trigger a movement bonus, the rejection was more to do with having a movement bonus at all. And it's quite beside your point of GGG having us design uniques in parallel with little sense of our environment.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, it was very interesting to read, and I do share some of your concerns and conclusions.

I was emailing back and forth about my unique back in november, but although we were making some progress I felt how overworked they are and decided not to push too hard right ahead of the new expansion that was coming, and after that I've decided that I'm not in any rush and don't mind that GGG gets time to work on some of their backlog before getting back to mine.

Also, I'm hoping the metagame might stabilize somewhat more over time, making designing a relevant unique easier as time goes on.

I've also come to realize that it's likely best to aim for designing a unique that is an interesting one for low/mid levels, not one that tries being endgame worthy, and I'm slightly moving away from my original stance where I'd want to have my unique use a base item that is free of other uniques, to instead have it share with an existing unpopular unique (vine circlet comes to mind), to prevent the infernal mantle effect, and also makes it less likely that a new unique using the same slot appears later.

In any case, atleast so far in the process I feel GGG are living up to my expectations (being a software developer myself and having hosted my own modded game servers for a game before, I understand some of the challenges they face) and I'm confident that while I may have had to adjust my thoughts on what kind of unique to design, I will in the end get something that I will be happy with.

And to not make myself seem like a total white knight here, I will instead share my (minor) pet peeve I've had, and that's that I wasn't allowed to get a bigger more high resolution version of my forum avatar for my own use... but, in the end it's not a big deal.

I wanted to implement an item with no mods at all and nothing but lore and they STILL said no. So you just can't win. I doubt I'll ever bother making mine.
