I was able to go to the flooded depth and the lower prison, and i was able to enter those zones without having my freeze issue.
But the game is totally unplayable this way, and it took my quite a lot of try with a lv 14 marauder to only attain the flooded depth, without speaking of the lower prison, so i would like to find a way to make it work on my ubuntu system.
If anyone has an idea on how to resolve the problem, i would be happy to try it if it allow me to play this wonderful game ^^

I've never been able to successfully play a decent game using VirtualBox or VMWare. The VM emulation or whatever is just too crappy to take advantage of all the hardware properly. It's not even worth doing.

As for getting it to work in linux directly, have you tried this guide yet? If so, what problems are you still having (some of them are known problems like graphics stutter on effects with ATI/AMD video cards)

Sorry it was a trying experience for you! I know it can be setting up an OS in VirtualBox your first time.

Well, as far as getting Ubuntu working, I can suggest trying a different video driver. I don't recall if you said which video card and driver you are using, but, generally, if you are using the proprietary driver, try the open source one, or vice versa.

Other than that, maybe some package that is part of/interfaces with your particular TCP/IP stack is borked. You could try a fresh installation of Ubuntu.

Another thing to try would be temporarily bypassing any routers and switches in your home network and connecting the computer directly to your modem.

Try this first if you have Nvidia. From my guide:

For Nvidia Graphics Card Owners only - FPS drops fix:

In the PlayOnLinux configuration window, once again click on the name of the virtual drive that we made (PoE).

- Click the "Display" tab.

- Next, select "disabled" in the drop-down box next to "GLSL Support".

- Close the PlayOnLinux configuration window.

- Enjoy graphics free of FPS drops.
First, thanks for your fast responses and your help, it is reassuring to see that there are people ready to help others solve theirs problems =)
I should have quoted myself from the 77th page to make it easier to remember what was my problem, sorry ^^

Hello everyone
I have been trying to make this game work fine for almost two weeks, and managed to solve almost everything (game not starting, fire arrow crashes, font, etc) thanks to this thread, but there is still an issue that prevent me from going any further in the game: when i enter in certain zones (flooded depths, lower prison, and probably some other later, but i can't pass the lower prison), the game just freeze for around 30s and return to the logging screen, with one message like "you have been disconnected from the server".
No matter what i do and the setting i choose, it happen when i enter in those area.
Except for this freeze, i have been able to run the game perfectly (the fps are a little low but it is not unplayable) on wine, and then tried on playonlinux using Sovyn's guide, hoping there would be changes, but the same thing happen again.

I hope someone know how to fix it, and thanks for your hard work =)

ubuntu 12.04 lts 32bits
Intel® Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2220 @ 2.40GHz × 2
GeForce 7100 / NVIDIA nForce 630i/PCI/SSE2
2,8 Gb ram

Also, the exact message i get when i get disconnected is "An unexpected disconnection occurred.", but i don't think it is relevant as it is just the formulation used by PoE.

I was not really thinking of playing PoE on virtualbox, i solely tried it to see if the same issue happened, and i specified the fps because it's unplayable on it, or else i would have passed the zones on virtualbox and played the rest of the game on wine. I also think virtualbox is pretty useless when it come to games.

As i specified on my first post, i have also this issue when i install the game using Sovyn's guide, and i am already playing with GLSL support disabled.

Well, about windows it's more that i don't enjoy solving problems on it, when there are problems most of the time you can't really do anything about it and it's frustrating, while on linux when trying to solve it you learn and if it's not working, most of the time it's your fault (well trying to make windows programs run is a different story). In my case for an unknown reason the system would not recognize the nvidia drivers for the video card as compatible, and after trying a lot of thing i just installed exactly the same system, the same way, with the same config and this time it somehow worked...

Actually i am already directly connected on my modem, so i don't think it come from that.

I have not yet tried to change the drivers, i will try to do it first. I have been using the proprietary driver from nvidia, i will try some others and see what happen.
If this don't work, i will try with a new system, but this will be a pain because i have already pretty much personalized mine... Well, this may also be the reason i am experiencing this issue on PoE, and the game is worth the time it will take to do another system suited for me =)
I will try this and see what happen, and post the results here. It would be a good thing if this issue come only from my system, because very few people will have this issue (there are already enough to deal with), and it will be ok when i will use a fresh system.

OK, your video card/chip is very old so make sure if they have a legacy driver you use that one.

On the Nvidia website they probably have a driver selection tool in the support area to find the correct driver. Just checked for you... looks like this one: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-ia32-304.88-driver.html

If that's what you have installed already, then uninstall it and reboot and your system should be using the open source driver. If not, update to version 304.88 and let us know how it goes.
I'm not sure if this is a Wine issue or a general PoE issue, and it probably affects about 0% of PoE's userbase, but I figured I'd mention it.

Some of you may know that the "Diablo font" (as used for pretty much everything in D1 and D2) is actually a typeface called Exocet, by Jonathan Barnbrook. Well, the typeface that PoE uses for most of its UI is Fontin, by Jos Buivenga. I found that font years ago, loved it, downloaded it from the official web-page in the highest-quality they offered (which I figured was OpenType format), and I've kept it installed ever since.

Well, it turns out that when PoE tries to use Fontin itself, Wine ignores the version of the font bundled with the game (which happens to be in TrueType format), and instead uses the OpenType version I had installed locally. Although this works perfectly in, say, the Wine version of notepad.exe, PoE must be doing a weird thing because the spacing wound up all crazy. Long story short, I uninstalled the OpenType version of Fontin, and then suddenly everything looked so much better! Rather than trying to explain it myself, I've put together a gallery of before-and-after images, with descriptions below each image.

Note that things still aren't quite perfect; italic text is still pretty glitched and on the loading screen you can see a glitch between the 'a' and the 't' in "Lioneye's Watch". I seem to recall that using the latest version of Wine cleared up the italic text but not the regular text, so maybe now that I've cleared up the regular text on my own, using the latest version of Wine will make all the text perfect.

I installed Fontin a while back before I wrote my guide, when I was trying to figure out how to fix the font corruption issue. Well, I did notice that the game used the installed font (according to the path reported in the debug log), but it made no difference for me in terms of the in-game font problem, which was just that italic text looked a bit corrupted (regular text was fine). Since following my guide, all fonts are perfect without installing Fontin. Basically the problem was the PoE installer messing things up, so the trick was to simply copy the fully installed PoE folder over into a fresh Wine prefix and run it from there.
Seem like the game won't work anymore the open source driver, so i will return on the proprietary one for now. It will take some time before i try with a fresh system, as i am actually a little busy and it will need some preparation.

Here is the error message i get when i try to run PoE with the open source driver:

You need Mesa 9 not Mesa 8 for PoE.

What does the output of ...

glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version"

...say?

If you need Mesa 9, you can follow the directions from my guide as follows:

First, I removed the proprietary drivers, if present.

I then rebooted just in case.

In a system terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update

Then I went to the Update Manager as I wanted to see exactly what packages were being updated.

I installed everything suggested.

Then I rebooted again.

In a system terminal:

glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version"

....Now reads Mesa 9.0 instead of 8.x.
One of the folks that did not have success getting PoE running using my guide contacted me and as it turns out, he is running an Intel Mobile 915GM video chipset. Sadly not many games will run on this - native Windows OR Linux/Wine. Just a heads up to those using older Intel integrated chipsets.
