[1.0.3] The Caged God --- 2H WHATEVER godlike DPS build--updated tanky RT version

This is my current gear at lvl 68 have 4400hp and max res with 25% chance to block
My dps is 10500 DS and 2000 ST unbuffed none crit build btw

I'm new to this game and was following the other popular newbie friendly build. However, this build seems very interesting to me, but I must be doing something wrong. I have 464 strength, but when I use the Pillar Weapon, the DPS on my Ground Slam & Heavy Strike just plummet from over 4k to just over 1k.

I'm not specced at all like the original poster, but I thought with my strength numbers and gems I'd get DPS above what I have now. I was just trying it out before investing heavily in Orbs of Regrets since I don't have too many. Can someone help me out and let me know what's wrong with my spec or gear and why I'm not seeing the huge DPS? Thanks

Gear

Weapon I currently use on my regular spec and get well over 4k dps, not sure exactly how much.

Same problem here.
I've made my old fully-respected lvl 58 mara to this build. With the pillar i have only 700 heavy strike DPS(1600 with my original weapon) without any support gem. I have 500 str atm.

Passive tree: exactly same as guide on page 1

need some help here.

EDIT:

Well, i've just figured out that this is actually normal. With 500 str the base damage is 180-297. So i guess the damage would be more acceptable with higher level and better gear.

How'd you figure 297? Using the same formula as the original poster, you should have 360 unless I'm doing something wrong. The 360 would assume you had no dex modifiers applied to the weapon.

Caged God
32*(1+16%*500/10)*1.25=360

Your old weapon should have 320 DPS.
(249+391)/2*1=320

Again I'm new so hopefully those calculations are right, but based on those numbers, you should still have more DPS with the Caged God weapon than your original.
@joeedomi and @Stinkycabbage

What you are doing wrong is no flat phys dmg modifiers on any of your gear. ie "adds x-x physical dmg" gear. These mods GREATLY increase your dps as they scale into the Str scaling formula very well. Think of it as increasing your base weapon damage for that huge scaling % dmg increase you are getting from str. Thus why things like Meginords, Abyssus, Bringer of Rain, Flat phys mod gloves, rings, and amulets are all part of the NEEDED/STRONGLY RECOMMENDED section in the gearing guide. But those flat phys modifiers are what really make the dps difference when you have the str to back it up.

I am also following this guide using the gear he recommends and using Double Strike, Spect Throw, and doing 14k+ DS group buffed, and high end of 3k ST group buffed. The only complaint I have about the original build is that it is a bit squishy and at times I am mana starved on ST. Both of which can be solved with a few more levels and a few gear upgrades (ie going from 1% mana leech to 2%, finding better items with more hp over the dps stats I chose etc)

I actually started doing this build right when full release since I was kinda curious how I would be able to build around Pillar. Luckily, I made from my preexisting Marauder who was using Marohi at some point for GS. Luckily, I did not invest much in weapon specific nodes, so the transition was very smooth. Overall, this build is doing well end-game maps. Of course, I still have not tested out 71+ maps since most of my other characters have been high lvl maps.
Sometimes you can take the game out of the garage but you can't take the garage out of the game.

Those Boots and this Guide made me think about a caged god build and well, after some weeks now i got to say i am very very happy with it. I started with a Scion though.

I went a diffrent way, no crits. I am 85 now and do 21k Infernal Blow with 7500 Life, 750 Str. and doing lvl 75 Maps. Feels like farming the ledge.

My Build lvl 85

The original post of this thread (the build, basically) is completely misleading because the poster said that the staff goes to 640 dps with X stats or 800 with Y stats, which is misleading.

Let me explain this in honest and true words, not like the poster who was just trying to get famous by showing only half of the truth.

Pillar is an insane weapon because you can get a gigantic %increased bonus to your damage while becoming really tanky because of how strength works. You also scale immensely with raw attributes which is always good for gems/gear, you have access to block (which is huge) and it's a cheap staff which will scale with you. You can reach really high DPS levels. It's kind of insane.

HOWEVER, DPS wise, a good, rare staff with a regular melee build will do more damage. Why? because, contrary to what the poster would have you believe, if you follow HIS example of math (which is wrong), a regular build for staves will get ~300% increased melee physical damage, which makes a 500 DPS staff (which is a good rare staff worth like 4 exalts, not insane, not even great, but good), multiplied by the increased, earns 1500 dps.

This is why you don't do math like that. It's wrong.

Pillar doesn't scale off its OWN damage, it's not how it's meant to work. You stack gigantic strength to get big increased % bonusses and then use jewellry and uniques with really high FLAT damage to get a base damage, because Pillars base damage is so LOW. It basically works like Facebreakers, but better.

Pillar has alot of advantages over other staff builds, ESPECIALLY from level 13-90, once you reach the really, really high levels, when you basically have so much currency you don't give a crap anymore and wanna squeeze every bit of damage out of your character while maintaining survivability, it's worth swapping to a god-like staff.

In other words, a good staff will be better than Pillar, but not worth swapping to because of all the nice little things of Pillar (scaling with attributes, easy gearing, etc), but once you are advanced enough in your build and get access to a really good / god-like staff, it's worth swapping.

(Of course you would have to change the passive tree).

Hegemony does a great job at explaining this, just search it up on youtube (Hegemony Pillar of the caged god build or something).

It's kind of annoying to see someone stating half-truths or mislead just for the e-peen...
