it would be really hard for ggg to say "we will work on balancing casters" or something along those lines -.-

Indeed.

Srsly though, they did some tweaking with fire, and that helped a bit, maybe they could move on to ice next?
i had another idea of how to make casters competitive in endgame.

how if ggg adds some properties to spells like: "additional 50% increased critchance per 30% increased spelldamage, x% reduced spelldamage"

with enough "x% reduced spelldamage" casters with medium gear stay at the same dps but casters with very good gear become a very high dps boost and the gap between attackdamage and spelldamage becomes smaller at endgame.
ING: "MeneaterMildrid" or "WICKEDSICKmoves"
There's two main issues:

1. Spells depending on gem's level for damage. Which is a fixed amount and therefore provides very low scalability with gear and skill points. This has been an issue in many modern RPGs (Skyrim for example).

2. Monsters with resistances. Seriously, who came up with the idea that 90% of monsters should either have 'Elemental Resistance' or 'Resists Fire / Cold / Lightning'? It serves no purpose. My progress just slows to a crawl when map has Zombies or Skeletal Mages. It doesn't make the gameplay harder, just more tedious because I have to shoot at a damn white Zombie for 5 seconds.

GGG should focus on solving both these issues, though nr. 2 could be fixed in a minor patch whereas scalability requires a lot more testing.
Casters needs nodes like, all your spells penetrate 5-15% resistance, or 10% of your spell damage are converted into elemental penetration, or your fire/cold gems penetrate 5-15% of fire/cold resistance, and the problems are solved...

put a 10%less damage +10%less aoe modifier on penetration gems, increase their penetration to reach 60-70% at lvl20

Today I finally got fed up of my Ice Spear Witch. 3 maps in a row where 90% of mobs have Elemental or Cold resistances - Rhoas, Zombies, Skeletal Mages, Cold Skeletons, various Undying, Avian Retches. I could barely kill a rare Avian Retch with Life Regen and Elemental Resistance. And this was with Cold Penetration gem + Frostbite!

These high resistance mobs need to be fixed asap.
the longevity of this thread is amusing to me , it is a shame it topic is no laughing matter.

after reading a bunch of the responses , if have come to a few conclusions.

1 penetration should not be a gem, rather it should be in the form of elemental themed passive , Id go so far as to say that all the dedicated elemental passive nodes should be switched from damage to penetration , there aren't that many to begin with.

2
despite what everyone says , i do not think being forced to use life leech is all that bad , the gem is extremely effective and the fact that it is effected by all damage type means that it is easily twice as effective % point per % point to any physical leech stat.

3
i still contend that it should be easier to get spell oriented afixes , and i would go so far as to say certain staffs wands and daggers in a tier should be converted into dedicated spell items.

namely the slower attack speed ones that most attack base builds like to ignore anyway.

goats horns
sage wands
skinning knives
and kris's
primitive staff
and royal staffs
and all their later tier versions

ofcourse we may need more spell themed mods ,
like adding penetration to items
or spell mana on hit and life on hit
or bonuses to status effects ,
but it is possible

I honestly believe this would be a step in the right direction.
