ggg needs to take steps to make spells more approachable

Wish casters were strong... don't care for the totem builds being previously OP though.

I think they need to add Iron Will to the skill tree. It'd add an easy way for casters to build tanky and still have decent dps without wasting a gem slot.
What really needs to be done is to increase spells base critical chance.
I mean, 4% base critical chance on lightning spells where you can have 9+ on any critical based weapons ... e.g. wands/daggers/harbringer bows.

For that matter, all those 3 mentionned weapons can reach way higher base damage through scaling and can shock way more reliably.
They can also freeze through the use of Hatred Aura and skill usage mana costs are way lower.

In such regards, what's the point of playing a caster ?

casters must have the possibility to get as high dps as a ranged attacker even if they are both on very high gearlvl. Atm there is no way to get as high dps as a lightning arrow ranger with any spell except discharge maybe.

im realy interrested to see how ggg addresses this problem. If they dont to anything about it spellcasters will get worse and worse with every high dps weapon found.

The worst thing, for me at least, is life leech. Certain spells like flameblast and traps CANNOT lifeleech properly because of long cast times or just completely incapable of doing it, and no amount of non-pure minion build minions, decoy totems, kiting, spell totem skeletons, kiting, etc makes up for the survivability increase and tankiness a physical attacker gets via life leech, especially with vaal pact. Sure, some spells work very nicely with life leech, but not all of them can, and still require a gem slot that greatly hampers casters DPS even further or forces them to use an expensive 6 link.

Well this has a lot to do with the power creep.

Mob damage has gone way up so the average player's life has gone way up. I remember in CB, 2-3k was about average for standard, 3.5k-5k was HC. Now it's 4-10k and 4k w/o heavy armor is considered a glass cannon, and still won't have a shot against many end game bosses w/o max spell block.

With this basically doubling in life pools, the flasks haven't kept up. Sanctified flasks are nice and all but 230ish life/sec is what many regen builds have standard, for a non-regen/high life build it's not doing you a large favor.

We really need a flask that's reaching 500-1k life regen sec even if it's req lvl 70.

Leech is really blowing all other forms of recovery out of the water, life and mana.

...and I've been bitching about mana regen since then.

Add no leech affix to the map pool and see how enraged everyone gets, especially with BM falling out of favor.

If casters didn't rely so heavily on life/mana leech I think they'd be in a much better spot.

Also they probably could use some higher crit spells to compete with daggers/wands/staves. The only spells over 7% are slow, nuke like spells. While you can get a 9% 2 aps dagger. Hell even a 1.2 - 1.25 aps staff beats out ice spear when you consider how low ICS is compared to IAS.
