Hey! I'm using this build and worked fine up till 45+ and I'm lvl 50 now, the most problem is survivability and progressing, I'm just in the start of Cruel A3. Anyone got any tips on what to improve?

Right now I'm aiming for a bit more armor but don't know if that's the best choice at this level.

You need to get a 4L item and a 3L item. The 4L needs to be 3 Green 1 Red. The 3L needs to be 2 Green 1 Red. You need to put EK + Fork + Mana Leach + Added Fire Damage into the 4L. You need to put Bear Trap + Added Fire Damage + Culling Strike into the 3L. These two skills are the bread and butter of this build. Without them and their proper support gems you are basically crippling yourself. At level 50 with these gems and relatively decent gear my bear trap did 4500 DPS and my EK did 900 DPS.

Next you'll want a Spell Totem linked with Summon Skeletons. This combination is great for flicker mobs and getting the focus off of you so you can get EK off. It's also great for high mobility targets that are hard to lead into bear trap. THey'll stop and focus the skeletons and you can toss a bear trap on them. You'll find this particularly useful in the Warzone/Battlezone area of Act 3 where there are a ton of lightning casters.

You'll want to make sure you have a level 1 Temporal Chains curse available. Toss it on groups of mobs. Toss it on solo mobs. Toss it on mobile mobs. Toss it on fast attacking mobs. Toss it on everything you can. This curse is a god send for survivability. It allows you to reposition yourself to cast the perfect EK or nail that pesky mobile mob with a bear trap or make sure that those lightning casters only get one or two attacks off before you kill them. It'll also allow you to dodge a lot of projectiles.

The technique I use for dealing with high damage output groups and ranged mobs is a variant of kiting. I don't know if you're familiar with the game DotA, but if you are it's basically like orb walking. You throw EK, take a step or two away, throw EK again. Against projectile/ranged mobs those couples of steps in between EK will allow you to dodge a lot of the incoming projectiles.

You definitely want Frost Wall linked with Increased Duration. This will save your life in many ways. It'll take some time to figure out how best to use it, but you can use it to create a funnel. You can use it to prevent shield charging enemies from landing that devastating stun. You can use it to prevent ranged enemies from hitting you. Taking damage? throw it in front of you to get people off your ass.

Get yourself a Lightning Resist ring. I don't care if it's blue or yellow, but if you can get yourself a ring with 25+% lightning resist you'll save yourself a ton of damage. I believe I found a blue lightning resist ring with 26% resist and some Int. I augmented it and got 36% more lightning resist. I use this ring whenever I'm in Act 3 because there are two really strong lightning mobs that can easily kill the unwary.

Finally one last surviability technique. When you're in the sewers or the warehouses dealing with those flicker/teleporting lightning guys that then explode and deal like 500-600 damage. When you see them in the distance you should have more than enough time to drop a bear trap right where you're standing. Chances are they're going to jump right on it and they'll die, if not you can throw an EK and they should then die.

Wow, thanks for that detailed answer! Will fix the sockets ASAP! Already have Spell Totem, Skeletons and Temporal Chains ready for use, just not any good sockets but this will be my first fix.
The Lightning Resist ring is no problem, got a few white 30% in the stash so will make one blue or yellow, will se.

But really, thank you so much!

That weapon does not boost the damage of either Bear Trap or Ethereal Knives. %Physical Damage mods on weapons only add the damage to weapon damage.

Yeah I know, just haven't found any better yet and haven't started trade for items because it's been going so well up till now and that's why I will start trading now! :)
Thanks anyway!

How is it possible to run 3 reserved mana auras without taking like reduced reserved mana nodes. I currently run Discipline, Vitality, Hatred and Clarity and I can't ever imagine being able to add on Determination or anything like that on top of it. Out of 1300 I have 1100 reserved and even taking Clarity off does not alleviate this problem because, even with a Reduced Mana support, Determination is another 30%off the top (ends up being like 88%) reserved.

Is it just a matter of having really high ES gear for EB so that even if most of it is reserved you still have a decent amount left for EK and bear trap?

Check out one of the example videos here.

AS you can see he's running Vitality, Hatred, Determination, and Discipline. This leaves him with 360 mana left over. With his mana regeneration and mana leech this is more than enough to use all of his abilities without problems.

Minddrinker is for physical attack damage, so no.
I'm going to start one of these on softcore (too lazy to use beartrap or watch out for phys reflect) as a character to play on the side. I think the idea of a physical spell is really cool, as it changes the way you go about support gems and skill points, and the spell itself is just badass.

One thing confuses me about this build though -- why is it Shadow instead of Witch? If mana is an big issue, wouldn't the 1-point 40% mana regen from the witch starting area (that you can't access freely with this build) be very helpful? Or 3 points for 60% mana regen and 8% max mana, 4 points for 60% mana regen and 20% max mana?

I like shadow more, I'm just wondering if these points really wouldn't be taken if the opportunity was there?

So I'm hitting the level 65 mark now, and I'm ready to switch to start building toward end game gear. I know my priority is +life gear. How about for base armor type? Am I looking for gear that is mostly high in armor, energy shield, or am I looking for hybrid pieces that have a decent amount in both? Like I've seen some chestplates with 400~ armor, 200~ energy shield. Is that what I should be shooting for?
Just to make sure, +elemental dmg on gear such as
does work for EK right?

No, even if it was physical damage instead of lightning, it still wouldn't work with EK.

If anyone could give me some advice, I would appreciate it. I feel like I am doing something very wrong because my DPS seems very lacking. My EK is listed as 549 DPS and my Bear Trap is listed as 4295 DPS. Maybe I should go back to fork instead of chain? I am level 54 and below is my gear:

Even though my weapon is like 20 levels lower then me, I still feel its good. Maybe I am missing something

I havent switched to eldritch battery yet, even though I have 1719 HP. Here is my build so far, pretty much following the original suggestions.
Dump chain and add faster projectiles.

Get a shield that has 2 +spell damage % modifiers.
