The rich get richer, the poor get screwed

Yup, as long as you are not using your own economy, even as long as you own other currency to use on your own items at some other point, you are not self found.

You did not drop your lioneye's bow and pick up 3 ex off the ground. As far as I can see, the ground said "Hey, thanks for this bow, pick it up again when you want to use it."

Hmm, you seem to be confusing the self found player by nature, with a trader choosing to abstain from trading.

Something I come across a lot, it amuses me.

To put it in an analogy.

I'm not a priest who abstains from alcohol because of a vow, nor an alcoholic who abstains from alcohol for health.

I'm someone who just doesn't enjoy alcohol. My way of life, the norm, is to just not drink.

I played as I would in PoE for a few weeks when OB started and was getting harshly brickwalled. I never bought any gear or any gem, never exchanged currency, any quality gems were raised from 1 with GCPs (unless I happened to find a considerably higher quality one, then I'd take that with GCP from where it was). Hell, I never even muled gems, I was around lvl 80 iirc when I finally found the last gems for my build.

I found a white 6L glorious plate, exactly what my ele wander needed (yes I started whith what is probably the most gear (non-unique) dependant build, ever) I needed to roll this chest to be usable. When farming, I picked up a 6 soc Karui and put the 3 chances I had through it before vending for 7 jeweller's. It turned Marohi on the 3rd.

I posted it in general, shocked at my luck. Someone made an offer, I said I wouldn't be selling. After grinding away and making no progress I reluctantly posted it in trade thread.

Sold it for something like 11 ex (this was a long time ago) and put the whole lot through my 6L and got nothing.

Around the same time I found a Lioneye in a 67 map, still with my chest unusable, I posted the Lioneye and it sold for 20 ex. That too went through my chest and produced shit.

Also around this time, quite frustrated, I posted a thread with a load of items I had amassing. I think an axe went for around 1 ex and a few gems and odds and ends for the odd alch and chaos, oh and a wand for a few chaos.

I still ended up with nothing from it. Remember any currency I found, ever, would go directly into crafting, the currency I got from the trades went straight into crafting, sadly it was wasted.

I closed the trade thread after a few days, it was not how I wanted to play.

Finally I managed to get a 'result' on the glorious, a pretty bad result to anyone else, but a result that meant my wander could use it. After it was chromed, that is.

I used all the chromes I had and farmed for weeks, putting every chrome through the chest.
After about 1500+, I opened a trade thread, saying.. Getting rid of 5Ls in my stash for cheap chromes in order to chrome my chest. The title, I think was 'cheap 5Ls for chromes.

I sold one for 200 chromes, put them all through the chest and got nothing.
The thread remained up and while farming, a stray chrome got the result I wanted.

The chest, that took all that currency and in the end was useable without it, is this chest here

which has on more than a few occasions been labelled as bad.

So, while none of the currency actually produced any of the finished product, they did contribute to the long term procedure. The wander was shelved soon after, the chest has sat in my stash since and I haven't traded a single thing since then.
This, by the way, was back in February.

It doesn't make any difference whether this invalidates anything, to anyone, because I am a self found player, that's how I play, whether I lost myself at a party and had a few champaigns or not, I still don't drink.
Casually casual.

hello.
Unlike real life though, everyone has that chance to find an exalt, or a rare unique, and then turn a profit from it if you're skilled enough at trading.
