There's no shitstorm about a free promotion gift. People are drawing attention to the fact that product placement in a fantasy game environment feels really out of place. That's a legitimate criticism regardless of which business model GGG has chosen to adopt.

A year ago i would never have expected to see stuff like instanced loot or ads (because an ad is exactly what this footprint is) in the game, but fast forward to now and here they are.

The direction of the game, and the player base it caters to, have both undergone a not so subtle shift over that year and im not at all impressed with that shifts direction.

Would we be seeing stuff like these immersion-shattering, controversy-inducing ad-footprints if GGG had strongly succeeded at making said appealing product, and PoE was a runaway success? I think not.

Slippery slope is not a logical fallacy if you can show why the slope is slippery. This is only GGG's first offense at putting product placement in the game, but if the devs put out a statement defending the decision, then it's safe to say that the slope is actually there.
