PoE Performance Issues still present. Need a word harsher than abysmal.

These are extremely odd spikes of your graphics card suddenly just dropping heavily in clock speeds for a small amount of time. It definitely should not be happening.

The interesting thing is that it is similar to thermal throttling, but your temperatures never go above 52c.

These sudden fps drops happen all the time in certain areas of Act 3 and extremely rarely in other Acts. It also doesn't happen in other games, at least the ones I've tried - D3, TL2, Van Helsing etc.

For what it's worth this card is quite old - HD4850 - but I'm building another PC, which has a 7870, so it will be interesting to see the difference.

Thanks for taking the time to troubleshoot this logokas.

I have nothing constructive to add, sadly. Hope you or someone
else figures this out soon enough.

For ATI cards, the feature I'm referring to is PowerPlay. PowerPlay is a power management feature that was introduced in some ATI notebook GPUs, and has been used since the Radeon 3800 series in desktop graphics cards. So, if your card is made later than that, you may be experiencing this same issue.

I managed to disable the downclocking on idle mode. As far as i can tell it improved the performance a bit, but it didn't remove the fps spikes completly.
Frame time still spikes up to 189 ! And fps spikes down from 111 to 0 sometimes.
So there has to be smth wrong with PoEs graphics engine.

For all who want to try nevertheless, you have to do the following:
Warning: This might destroy ur gpu if you make any mistake

1. open CCC
2. Enable Overdrive (at ur own risk) and set the clock to the default clock (middle position)
3. Save a Profile with this setting, don't activate it yet.
4. Go to \AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles and open the just created profile
5. Search for these Keys:
"
<Feature name="CoreClockTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="65000" />

<Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="80000" />

Change the value to the Default Core clock of your GPU (80000 = 800Mhz for example)
if you don't know what to put there, take the value under the respective "Want_1" or "Want_2"

6. Save and activate the profile
7. Your gpu will idle at full speed

To undo: Load any other profile, or undo changes to this and reload the profile.

I'd also like to share an update from official side with you guys:

Hey there,

We have our team working with Radeon cards at the moment to try and get this issue fixed up.
Unfortunately we don't have an ETA as to when this will be sorry.

Regards,
Henry

For NVIDIA users (running Vista or newer) that want to stop there video card from automatically underclocking when not in use, do the following:

1) Create a Application Specific Profile for "C:\Windows\System32\dwm.exe"
2) Create a Application Specific Profile for "C:\Windows\explorer.exe"
3) Create a Application Specific Profile for Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari etc.
4) Create a Application Specific Profile for Steam, Origin, Desura etc.

5) Set Power Management for these profiles to "Prefer Maximum Performance"

6) Reboot the computer

*) This process doesn't void warranty and won't cause any harm unless you have poor ventilation in your computer case or don't regularly clean out dust.

Nvidia in their infinite wisdom have added hidden default profiles for these applications (I think the 280 or 260 series of drivers introduced them) that are configured for power savings. The above process reverts the change.

The fixes above will certainly help some people, but does not deal with the underlying problem itself.

Naturally, the downclocking that occurs will affect PoE performance as it slows down so much that the card believes it to be at an idle power state, fooling it into slowing down, and affecting overall performance. So, it is helpful to use custom profiles to force the card to stay at it's maximum performance during Path of Exile running.

The bug that needs to be solved remains at the core of the rendering engine and the way it behaves.

I will emphasize this. The bug is not about the user, or their graphics setup, and cannot be faulted to them. This will need to be fixed by GGG, as it is an issue on their end, and has existed for a very long time, far too long to be excused simply by lack of resources or time.

They've had more than year to fix this, yet are no closer to solving the issue, and have provided no explanation as to why this solution has eluded them for this long. There has also been no communication regarding this issue to the base of players having this problem. No massive acquirement of hardware information, setups, configuration, driver settings, literally no info has even been requested by GGG in relation to the issue other than what make of cards this has occured on.

That fact, perhaps, is what is most disappointing of all about all this.
True

My fixing attempt 2 posts up, doesn't solve the problem, it just prevents the card from downclocking. Besides, that methode:
1. breaks warranty
2. can kill the card if smth wrong is set
3. Isn't officially supported in any way

I was just posting it as a proof of concept, and to show that there is nothing from the "user end" that we can do to fix the problem.
