Xaxyx, I feel that the problem with everyone getting their own loot would be that the market would become inflated. Unless you mean that only one person would get x loot from y enemy, and the rest would see nothing at all (and it would randomize each monster you kill).

The latter.

To be more specific: any model in which the loot that drops as a result of player X being in the game is allocated solely to player X. Loot only visible to player X is one solution. Loot visible to all, but collectible only by player X (aka "infinite timer") is another solution. At no time am I suggesting any alteration to the quantity of loot that drops.

I thought I read somewhere on this site that they might allow you to change the time on the loot before it gets FFA? Was I dreaming this or what? :3

This would be pretty ideal. The party leader being able to set a variable time for how long items remain locked to a person on the ground via the party screen. Minimum of a couple seconds maximum of like 10-15 or something.

Granted... that could be exploited. Party leader changes setting right before a boss dies etc. Could maybe make it not affect any actively aggro'd mobs, and display a message to everyone when the setting has been changed. Or maybe not even affect any currently open instances.

I can proof that it's not your loot until it is in your inventory when you play in a party: because someone else can pick it up.

How nice for you. Now, are you going to answer my question, or admit that you can't?

I must say, I love the idea of having an infinite timer. That way, you could at least see the loot that drops for your friends/randoms. Knowing that they got a rare that you're interested in, you could always ask if you could see what item it was.

Yeah this idea woudnt need much change in the current code either, just a changed timer from 5 seconds to 999 seconds or something.

Yes, and let's explore that model still further. Let's say, gods forbid, we're in a game with infinite timers and a rare bow drops for some random pug. The conversation might go like this:

Xaxyx: Say, random pug, that sure looks like a shiny rare bow. I noticed that you don't use bows. Would you mind sparing a moment to pick that up, identify it, link it, and perhaps consider offering it to me in trade or -- if you're feeling generous -- allow me to have it?

Random_Pug: NO SCREW U IM JUST GONNA LEAVE IT ON THE GROUND HA AH N00B SUCKAH

As it happens, I for one would not be deterred by this circumstance in the slightest. It wasn't my bow to begin with; so I haven't lost anything. If anything, I've gained: now I know that this guy isn't such a pleasant fellow, and I might seek to avoid him in the future.

How would that scenario strike you?

I'll interpret that as "I can't answer your question." So noted.

Still crickets from the rest of the REDS. Any takers? They do say that bullies are cowards at heart. Come on. Prove me wrong. I dare you.

Thing is, its very obvious that what you call REDS, or what i call "FFA Elitists" lacks arguments on how league options with infinite loot timer is bad.

I used to play D2 alot casually, but my public experience would just be annoying as i would not get *any valuable loot* at all due to me preferring ranged classes.

I would pay GGG with microtransaction cash to join a Infinite loot timer league even.
But if GGG ever wants to attract a wider crowd of players, they need infinite loot timer leagues.

Obvious indeed, given the screaming silence I've gotten so far in response to my inquiry. Truth be told, I was really expecting some half-baked theory about server populations and immersion and theme and blah blah. But nothing? Perhaps I finally managed to jab at the black heart of the issue.

Maybe next I'll ask Chris the same question.

I'm tempted to crank up a Kickstarter to see how much $$$ we could collect to try to bribe GGG into making a playable game for Greens. It's the ultimate expression of the submission to naked greed, symbolic on so many levels. How could they refuse?
