First I thought that free looting COMPLETLY SUCKS, but after I tested the new system I arranged with it and was ok.
Not as bad as I thought.

BUT, after a while my opinion has changed back again:

Free looting leads to the situation where people CAMP LOOT instead of fighting monsters.
Additionally its very uncomrotable for playing if you always have to care about not getting ripped off INSTEAD of focusing on the fight.

Overall opinion: MEH

I think "private loot" is the better solution.

Really, I dont see the advantage of cutthroat loot

The disadvantages are:

-you are alwayas stressed
-people camp loot
-people dont concentrate on fighting
-people COMPETE with each other. How can this be a positive thing if you play TOGEHTER as a party? The one who are playing with are STEALING from you? Positive atmosphere?
-timer are distracting

And the positive aspects?

-Its more thrilling?!? Not for me!

The longer I think about it the more it sucks. Just because you dont gain anything from it.

Your team mates camping your loot while you fight to save their lives is a pain in the arse!

When ever I have enough time left on the timer I'll stand next to my loot until the timer almost expires before clicking on it. It's fun to waste their time and hopefully train them to focus on the combat.

Easier to build an actual in game friendship and find REAL teammates.
People don't camp for loot.
People help each other progress.
More likely to run maps with other players

Absolutely none of this is dependent on FFA.

Also, people aren't stealing anything from you, since it wasn't yours in the first place. You must be in possession of, or be the owner of, something for it to be stolen.

You can say this all day everyday and it won't make a difference. Its people'e perceptions that matter and when they miss out on an item that had their name on it they feel like it was stolen. You telling them that it was not stolen means nothing to them. I know what you said there better than anyone and guess what? That post I made recently about playing in a public game a fusing was stolen from me, that's right stolen. Our party was calling out loot with that persons name on it to let them have it. It was working fine until something mildly valuable dropped like that fusing and then all of the sudden the rules were thrown out the window and one of them ganked it. I kept playing but my perception was that it was stolen. Nothing you or even the devs can say will change my perception.

Please sticky this thread so people have a place to go straight to. I got in on a few other random threads on this topic before being pointed here.

So anyways, loot is upstream from the majority of the game's features. It's upstream from some of its coolest hallmark features. Free For All loot can add an aspect of denial or teasing at the start of the flow, likely resulting in a noticable negative impact on the overall play experience.

I feel that "cut throat gameplay" should be reserved for "cut throat mode". Leave those degrees of challenge and frustration for those who choose it. Let Default Mode be Baby Mode with instanced loot or ten-second locks.

A few people in the different threads on this subject have mentioned they were enjoying everything else about the game to the maximum, until they encountered FFA loot. I encountered the same thing. Self-charging potions with affixes? Frakking epic. Way better than Health Globes. FF7-style linked socketables? Frakking epic. Way better than not even having Jewels and Runes anymore. I haven't found a Map yet, and I haven't been in a non-default League yet, but those were the main hooks that brought me here. I'm sticking through for those.

Path of Exile was shaping up to be a D3-killer in my mind, until I joined a random party and saw a few Rares and Orbs with my name on them get snatched up by other players. I ended up finishing a Merveil run with less loot than I normally get on my own. It was detrimental to my progress to have joined a party. That swings PoE from being a D3-killer to questionable as something that will be worth playing more than a few weeks since engaging with the community in-game is somewhat detrimental.

I had been debating which tier of Supporter to get for a few days, because all the listed features seemed almost tailored to me, and now I feel kind of relieved I only went with the minimum amount. That makes me kind of sad. It's just one thing that keeps this from being an easy favourite, and it makes an unusually large amount of distance for only being one thing.

This thread was stickied for quite awhile but was unstickied when the forums were reorganized a bit and it was moved from an old section into this one. Even so, it stays near the top of the Beta General Discussion section most of the time.
I think that currency items and rares/uniques should be allocated to players permanently, or atleast a bit longer. I was playing with a friend the other day and it was all chaos. We were fighting some mobs and the loot was popping out while we were fighting. We didn't want to pick up the stuff until the mobs were killed because we didn't want to die either. Both of us wanted the one and only Orb of Alchemy, but neither of us wanted to be the greedy one.

Maybe the partyleader could have an option to decide how to loot is allocated?

I'd still like to see per party options for the loot system. FFA, (Item Class) Weighted Round Robin, Roll (heck, why not?), and a better implementation of what we currently have.

In terms of the current looting system:

I think a possible compromise would be to add an option to permanently show (until picked up) the owner the item was allocated to. Basically, cater towards the people who want to use the honor system, but currently can't.

In essence, this is just a client side graphical change, really easy with how they have their code setup currently. Ideally, after the time expires, perhaps the name could be displayed in a crossed out font if its not yours to make it easily distinguishable.

A second client side option could be to require key to loot expired items on the ground if they aren't yours. This option would be for the people who really care about drops but don't want to accidently loot something that was not theirs.

With such an option people who play by the "name on it gets it if they want, no matter who loots" now has a way to keep track of what drops on the ground without worrying about stopping fighting. If the loot matters that much, then they can turn on the option to make sure they don't accidently click on the ground and pickup an item, which happens all too often.

This doesn't really solve anything for people who want pure FFA or instanced loot, but in terms of looking at the current deficiencies with the looting system, which can be seen when people stream in groups, I think a few extra visual options are needed.
Some nice options Drew_Benton. I would also like to have a loot log so we can see which players are violating the player established rules.

because of this stupid looting system no one parties together. its a complete failure how are you supposed to work as a team if some jackass just steals all your loot.
Funny, everytime I run pub map parties:

It's a full house. Have yet to see anyone complain about loot stealing. Not saying it doesn't happen, but haven't seen anyone complain about it.

Ran 1 last night for several hours. Always 6 ppl. They kept coming in. Some would say, "gotta leave, work", 2 seconds later, another one shows up.

Was fun.
