This a Bot
Guys would you please stop treating TehHammer like a criminal ?
As much as he might have continued to run his script, it's also up to players like everyone else, who could have reported the behaviour of his character much sooner. His character also had a pretty obvious name, so it's even more silly to assume he was that serious about being a *pro botter*. (could add a facepalm pic here lol, no don't!) So how much would it have helped if he'd stopped running his bot at times, so that it made it look like he's a legit character being played by real player? Not at all, quite the opposite actually. It is our job to recognize strange behaviour. He's not been the first botter and most likely won't be the last. But if other botters will work in the dark, like in personal instanced areas, it will be much harder to spot. And they won't just come to the forums and *admit it* like Hammer did. Plus they'll just roll a new character/account or alter their scripts instead, if they'd get caught. Sad but truth I'm not trying to defend botting or using scripts, but as long as people are doing it, it won't help to accuse 1 scripter. Heck, he even said it wasn't his own idea. He just got the skills to put an idea to life. So we can see ideas can work for anyone who has the skills and the mindset to do it. Or just juse someone else's work, like I'm sure some of yours would easily do. All we can do is help make the game less likely to be exploited, and keep our eyes peeled. If you're leaving PoE, chances are I'll rezz you as my minion! MWHAHAHAH

The first time I saw RemoteControlled I figured it was some sort of proto-bot. This was early into my days here, so I mentioned it to a mod. Even then it was likely some sort of recipe exploit, so I put it out of my mind (effortlessly) and got on with my own PoE testing/playing.
So it's not as if this is 'news' -- but I do agree that people who 'fess up' only when caught, especially when it's their job to find such exploits and report them, really should think a bit more carefully about why they're in a beta. Chris' response is exactly as I'd expect, a variation on the theme of fooling people once, then twice. I certainly wouldn't be as forgiving, but that's probably part of why Chris is running the show and most of us are just enjoying it. "OldManWithABot" is GGG's version of those shameful t-shirts certain offenders are made to wear. He's a very high level character, quite high profile. No one's going to confuse him for anyone else, and everyone's going to know what he did. He fooled them once; shame on him... https://linktr.ee/wjameschan -- everything I've ever done worth talking about, and even that is debatable. " Yes it does make sense to accuse him for not mentioning it because.. that's exactly what he did. He didn't mention anything until he got caught. He exploited the game for his own personal gain while simultaneously keeping it a secret. He's a beta tester. He should have reported the exploit as soon as he confirmed it worked. " Really?? It's our job to catch the cheaters, but it's not his job as a beta tester to report an exploit?? That is.. interesting logic. The exploit he used required him to be in town, where up to 29 other players could see his actions. You act like he was being a good boy by staying in town instead of going to his own personal instance where he couldn't be caught. Well I can assure you he would have done that if the game allowed personal instances of town. Also, if someone does create a bot for use outside of town, your entire argument will be invalid: That it's up to us to report cheating/hacking. How could we report it if we cant even see it?? Hence why the devs need to be doing everything they can to spot this kind of activity and taking swift action when they do. Defending a cheater and acting like he is some kind of hero for finding an exploit (that he did not report) is.. incredible. " No, that is not all we can do. The devs can also take a firm stance against any cheating/exploiting/hacking. Virtually every multiplayer game does this, and for very good reasons which should be painfully obvious. I'm really shocked at all the people who are defending cheating/hacking and acting like it's no big deal. Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 were both heavily impacted by widespread cheating/hacking/duping and I would like to think that GGG would realize how important it is to the game economy to try and prevent this from happening to PoE. |

Guys I made this thread because I was concerned now Chris has answered my concern.... Please do not flame others now it is done

" Come on.. flame from legit players who want to see the in-game economy protected from cheating/hacking/exploiting is too harsh for a cheater who gets busted?? It's not harsh enough. The banhammer would be much more suitable. EDIT: Oh, you meant don't flame the people defending the cheater? Well I'm sorry but.. I just feel very very strongly about the need to protect the economy from these kinds of exploits and I simply do not understand people defending his actions. BanHammer on TehHammer! Seriously give the old guy a chance. Shame on you for trying to keep this to yourself, old man.

" He also tested the very patience of GGG/their GMs as well as we the players, to report him as well. Taking "a firm stance" does nothing in an age of proxies, dynamic IPs and having the chance to create new accounts over and over again, come OB. All a ban would accomplish is to have another *archieved* and inactive (banned) account. Or a possibly deleted account, to be replaced by another one. What we need is mechanics that are less likely to be exploitable. And yes, "Really!" since, as you can see, people don't go to the police and telling the officer how they murdered the laws, on their own. Someone else has to do it. Calling down judgment on 1 person to make a case for others who might be tempted to try has never worked in history. So what makes you believe you have the right to call for a banhammer? As for making it less obvious, there are plenty of ways even more come OB and the time ahead. Towns will have many many more instances and those can be changed by a scipt as well. He also could have used more alt characters as well as less obvious names. Logging different characters is an easy task for a script as well as running the script in alternating towns/difficulties. Or how about adding artificial "breaks" so it looks more natural? There are many ways to make it a lot harder to detect by other players, if a person does not want to get caught. TehHammer didn't do that I'm against botting and farming as much as you are, I'm not defending it. If you're leaving PoE, chances are I'll rezz you as my minion! MWHAHAHAH

Chris, I expect a ZERO tolerance on this when OB goes live. Perma Ban, IP ban etc.. you name it.
Any small form of tolerance towards botting, spamming etc will not only make the in game economy fall like a stone, it will make your reputation as a honest developer go down the drain.. please, ZERO tolerance is needed here. Oldmanwithnolife, thank you for exploiting the game and not informing GGG about it until you were caught. I really question your motives here. Was it really "just to test if it was exploitable?".. sorry, but this is Pathetic behavior and judging by the many responses in this tread, it already HAS a negative effect on the game. Read it now! "First working bot in POE".. that would make some nice advertisement for GGG.. Personally, brushing this off with some jokes is a clear sign of weaksauce on the developers part.. Don't Touch my Sweep please GGG!

I wouldn't say they are brushing it off as they have stated to fix the issue, only other things i would like to mention is bad Oldman! and the war against botters is never ending, any suspicious activity has to be questioned, and the guilty punished, hung in town center if needs be.
Now presenting! Venom ink; malice in the pen, poison on the paper, anger in the mind.

The thing I am worried about it that if TOG, with a shitload of money can't even pay ONE guy minimal wage to sit in the game, flagging Goldspammers to Ban them left and right and not doing anything else, then how in the nine hells is a small company like GGG going to do this?
Please do not use the same stance TOG have on this: "assemble all the reports from players, and once in a blue moon ban 10K accounts and make it seem like a victory has been made (press releases and such.. bleh)", but have no human interaction or investigation from our side at all previous to that. Please GGG, dont let this be the shithole that drains the game. Don't Touch my Sweep please GGG!
