Very true. Ban assigning skill points in the hardcore leagues but there needs to be some sort of option in the normal league.

I think my idea of providing this option through a consumable rare item would be an elegant solution.

You could also consider letting a player reassign two skill points when they level instead of getting a new skill point.

Septile's point rings true in the hardcore and cut-throat leagues as well. The interesting thing about PoE is that it's impossible to screw up active skills, so it should be a little more difficult to nuke a character than in past arpgs.

There will probably be a difficult but not impossible way to refund a single skill point occasionally, to fix mistakes.

Hellgate London had a very rare item that drops off the last boss that could wipe your skills(in the last difficulty). 4% drop chance or something. Thought that was pretty cool. You had to work for your respec. You could trade it as well. So it was much like finding a rare rune in D2 as you could trade it for almost anything.

I think it would be nice if there was a one-time quest reward for killing the last endboss in each difficulty that would wipe your skill points.

That way, if you don't like your character you could start fresh in the new difficulty. And if you beat the last difficulty you could for example finalize your character as a PvP build.

The thing I disliked the most about Diablo 2, was having to level to 90 to try out this cool new PvP build I came up with only to find out it sucked in a way I hadn't anticipated. In Diablo 2 this wasn't a problem, because getting to level 90 was either 2 hours work or like 10 forum gold, but I imagine in PoE it would take days to weeks.

That is why I still feel like a dedicated PvP mode isn't a bad thing in PoE. You could just make all characters max level, give them a list of gear to choose from and balance the skills without changing the balance in PvE. These characters must never be able to interact with or switch to other Leagues of course!

This is what I wanted to hear. Especially considering PoE skill-system this is even more than enough.
He who fights with monsters
might take care lest he thereby
become a monster.

quests that activate specific passives could be an option . possiblity of special passives obtainable only from quests . might be interesting if each unique/boss game mob granted a passive , special or otherwise.

hope 'maybe some as quest rewards' is code for lots of sp quests.

like to tweak out my characters as much as possible . its not always about the most powerful build , but entertaining ones as well .

Well another idea with leveling and getting skill points is maybe allow the player to adjust his last 5 skill points every level.

That way he has a few levels to try out the abilities before they become locked.
How about allowing any skill to be reassigned to some other skill but over time? Like skill 1 is at grade 3, skill 2 is at grade 0 - player can chose to "forget" skill 1 and slowly learn about skill 2. But it never goes to skill 1 dropping to grade 0 - it stays at grade 1 forever. One can't completely forget what he knows.

Or other way around - skills that are not used slowly drop to grade 1 while the amount of free skill points increases when unused skill's grade drops. Time required for some skill's grade to drop is affected with skill LVL requirement and grade - higher the LVL requirement and grade, more time it takes to downgrade the skill. Probably not easy to implement, but it makes lotta sense to me.

So you want a timer on how long it takes to reallocate skill points. I think it would be infinitely easier just to have a respec option though with negative consequences so people are not just re shifting their character for every different area.
Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.
