Floating combat text
" This. 100% this. If GGG adds combat text, it will become mandatory to use. I do not want combat text in PoE. Yes I understand that some people want it as an option, but by adding it as an option, it ceases to be an option and becomes mandatory for everyone. It removes immersion, and one of the key bonuses PoE is the immersion. It would be a sad day indeed if/when immersion in PoE dies. So you want to find out if your character is doing more dmg with spell A over spell B? Why do you need numbers to tell you? Go kill some monsters and see how long it takes or how many hits it takes. The game view is already very cluttered so I'm not sure I would use this.

" 1: Combat text would be optional, NOT mandatory, that "point" isn't even worth debating... 2: It doesn't remove immersion at all, infact most of the RPG genre has it these days and they're still stealing years from people. 3: As you so kindly pointed out, the data to inform you of which attacks work better is already available by watching the enemy health bar. There is NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING wrong with having the actual damage display on attack, unless you're Slurms and don't like knowing how much life an enemy has. (Those who really want that information will still always find ways to attain it, combat text or no combat text.) /EDIT About the only valid argument against combat text that I can think of, is that it can cause horrific lag for some people on low end systems, however if it's optional, they can leave it off and it has no impact, positive or negative on them. It has already been proven that it wouldn't be optional. I say proven, because its a fact. Read previous posts to gain some enlightenment.
Also, saying it doesn't remove immersion and than talking about something else is not evidence to support your claim. |

A few option to enable some information to be displayed should be fine so long as it's not necessary (ie: the only cue for a giant attack is floating text).

Saying it would be mandatory even if it was optional is a big stretch. Even if you want to get all the edge you possibly can, you still could just stick to the 'test how many times you have to hit mobs to kill them' way if you enjoy it so much that you don't care about people who simply enjoy this kind of a feature.
And if you're worried about the accuracy of your testing, you could still switch it on just during the testing and turn it back off afterwards. Exercise some self control for god's sake, your presumed inability to forgo an 'advantage' that would be questionable at best can actually significantly reduce others' enjoyment. | |
bump...
GGG thank you for all the great things you are doing. You have combined every element of all other great Rpg's and joined them together as one Diamond, that will shine Forever.
This is coming straight from the heart <3 |

To address perceived disadvantage from no combat text, one could just run paid private leagues that exclude combat text. One could also run paid private leagues that give players the option of combat text.
For default public leagues, combat text should be player optional. Just turn off the text and play with immersion. No need to prevent the rest of us from enjoying combat text. Drawing from other ARPGs, such as Torchlight 2, players handle perceived disadvantage of no combat text by attacking a target dummy in town. Go beat on a dummy to assess damage against a target of your own level. Then go out to the immersive, textless wilds, forearmed with the knowledge of your capabilities against a target of your own level. Let others break immersion with their private combat text that doesn't affect you anyway. I must agree posters stretch their credibility with a claim that an optional feature is 'mandatory.' Mandatory would mean PoE displays combat text. Optional means the text can be turned off. Advantageous would mean users gain useful information from enabling optional combat text. But that useful information doesn't make combat text mandatory—it makes it advantageous. Combat text should appear as optional.
