Solo Self-Found Manmode 1 Week Race (March 3rd Event)

From reading a couple pages into this topic I can already tell this is going to reflect badly on the melee class, haha. Most people are probably going to go with Ground Slam or Lightning Strike builds. It will be interesting to see GGG's reaction to this.
Reads manmode.

Sees that GS, LS and auras are allowed.

Sad.
Hey guys i am just wondering if people have actually ever got up to and killed merc vaal using a 2h with melee? I am still trying to decide if i want to spec 1h+shield or 2h. Ive never actually played a proper melee like this and don't want to spec 2h if its going to be impossible once i reach merciless. Thanks if anyone can help out.

I've done as far as just before Vaal on merciless with my first ever toon when I knew nothing about the game and spent maybe 5gcp on gear if that. It's obviously possible but just not a cakewalk.

My Freeze Pulser died a few days ago so I tried it on Default: I walked up to Vaal with 83% fire resist, 4750ish life, 180 energy shield and around 4k armor. I granited when the slam started (but that is too late). I survived about 1 in 4 slams with <100 hp. The rest killed me.

The problem with fighting Vaal melee is that sometimes even if you get out of range and are almost half way across the room the slam still lands on you. I also noticed that if I was really really close to Vaal he would have to take a step back before slamming me. (But I don't know how melee attacking works that way - it probably positions you in a way where he can slam you.)

Just think of it this way: if you get hit you have to remake.

Hmm that is interesting. Sounds like using a shield or not wouldn't really change that situation very much. You just have to not get hit by him.
What about before vaal doing chamber/crematorium/pyramid etc? What were the hardest parts of merciless? Did you ever die before you got to vaal, and would using a shield make much of a difference do you feel?
I am also concerned about mana usage if i use a 1h, as i will be doing less damage per skill, i may have issues with mana pots running out before i can finish packs etc.

I don't think being 1h+ shield helps much (apart from a bit of extra life and much easier resists), the killing speed is a significant factor against Vaal. In general play, in terms of gearing and dealing with resists, 1h + shield is much easier though (assuming mainly marauder/templar area), but it can be a struggle for damage.

I fought and killed merci vaal in HC with two 2h melee builds, the first had 4.1k and I barely survived the slam (with like single digit HP left) because I got lucky.

The second time I used enfeeble AND tc. Due to desyncs (this is personal, may not affect you), I wouldn't fight Vaal with less than 5k hp without enfeeble if I couldn't absolutely guarantee that I won't get desync smashed.
Yeah i thought this as well. More sockets on average as well for skill diversity and more auras etc. Much easier to get two 3 sockets/links than one 5-6 socket/link item.

I may just put off getting any 2h or 1h/shield talents until much later on so that i can use either at any time in order to more effectively counteract RNG.
I'm rolling dual wield cleave so at least one proper melee in the race!
I've been playing around with the skill tree for hours now trying to figure out a build that is melee AND interests me. It's quite apparent there is a lack of viable options. The options that might allow you to get to the end of the week are just not interesting to me.

I wanted to do a dual claw, blood rage build WITHOUT going CI. I'd want to get enough life and life regen nodes but I'd also like to not do lightning strike but then what do I do? There needs to be more AOE options for melee for dual wield especially.

I was excited about this until I sat down and tried to make a build that interests me. I'm not sure anymore.
