Of course it's cowardice. But framing it as "poor black kid gets beaten up because of his skin color" is reaching. He marched side by side with violent people near other violent people. He should've known that getting beaten up was fairly probable in this scenario.

I don't remember saying that the sole reason he got beaten up was because of the color of his skin, but I don't think you can argue that it definitely wasn't either.

"A group of internet trolls, Klansman, and Neo-Nazis ganged up and beat a young black man bloody. But I'm sure his race has nothing to do with it."

Say out loud and you will see how silly that sounds.

The tweet framed it that way. Proving a negative is also futile. What I know is that violence erupted and he was in the middle of the happening.

You said that saying he was targeted because he is black was "reaching", indeed, you can't prove a negative, but the argument that "is reaching" can easily be dismissed by the context.

You can't prove they weren't targeting him for being black, but I can prove it isn't unreasonable to think they were.

Out of context, but from within this thread...

Nothing would've happened if that other guy hadn't started a fight. So no, these nazis weren't just hunting and beating black people for fun. Were they waiting for a better reason to do it? Probably.

President Trump declared Tuesday that counterprotesters at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville acted violently and should share the blame for the mayhem that left a woman dead and many injured. - TOP KEK!

Speaking at Trump Tower in Manhattan, the president called the events of Saturday at the “Unite the Right” rally a “horrible thing to watch,” but he emphasized that both sides acted irresponsibly. - True, just be careful not to hurt anyone's feelings!

"I think there's blame on both sides. And I have no doubt about it," Trump said.

“You had a group on one side that was bad and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent," he added. "No one wants to say that, but I’ll say it right now: You had a group on the other side that came charging in without a permit and they were very, very violent.” - I hope the justice department is looking into making a large number of arrests of violent commie protesters for civil rights violations.

Trump's remarks came a day after he belatedly condemned the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis and other hate groups that organized and participated in the rally. He had faced mounting pressure from lawmakers and civil rights groups over his failure to do so during his initial reaction to the violence, when he denounced violence “on many sides.”

Trump emphasized repeatedly that he believed many of the “Unite the Right” rally participants were not members of hate groups and were there to protest the pending removal by the city of a statue of the Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Another truth bomb dropped. Mega salt over this.

“You had people in that group who were protesting the taking down of what to them is a very, very important statue,” Trump said, before suggesting that Lee and other Confederate-era generals, including Stonewall Jackson, are the victims of historical revisionism attempting to delegitimize their roles.

Speaking rhetorically, Trump asked reporters whether George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, both slave owners, should suffer the same fate and have their statues removed. “You're changing history; you're changing culture,” he said. - That's exactly what they want. And Trump's rhetorical question was illustrating the fact that he's aware of this.

Trump reiterated his condemnation of neo-Nazis and other white supremacists. But he also made clear that he believed that some of the counterprotesters were armed and took aggressive actions that helped spark the violence. - Of course they were. It's all recorded on video posted on the internet that anyone can look up and see for themselves. I'd suggest people do that instead of tuning into the MSM.

“What about the alt-left that came charging at the alt-right — do they have any semblance of guilt?” Trump said. “They came charging, clubs in hand, swinging clubs.” -Tsk, tsk, tsk. You're supposed to make excuses for violent Commies just like the RINOs.

And Trump just drops another truth bomb. RINOs and libs are salty!

If they're serious about cracking down on violent protests, they could make violence at a political rally a federal crime, and a felony. Throw a rock at someone, 5 years in a federal pen. Bring knives, hammers or anything that can be used as an improvised melee weapon = federal weapons charge. The penalties currently aren't high enough to offer any sort of deterrence to doing it.

I'm still completely surprised when people unironically support antifa or any other group that is trying to actively shut down free speech or the right to assembly.

We have the first amendment in this country. Let the nazis (or any other group you fucking despise) spout their bullshit ideology and openly mock them from a respectable distance, separated by cops if need be. Defeat their words with words, not with bats and cars and guns and bombs.

The extremists on both sides are a disgrace to all Americans. The actual violence in Charlottesville was due to these groups getting exactly what they each wanted at the cost of everyone else.

---

Here's the America that I like to think we still are, deep down inside. Defending the people you despise from harm because you respect their humanity and challenge their opinions. Acts like these are truly transformative whereas beating him with a club degrades us all.

Or see also, Schwarzenegger's recent quote (which I agree with strongly). Note that while he disagrees with the ideas of the white supremacists in the strongest possible terms, he still does not advocate violence or censorship.
"
I have been horrified by the images of Nazis and white supremacists marching in Charlottesville and I was heartbroken that a domestic terrorist took an innocent life. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of Heather Heyer, Lt. Cullen, and Trooper-Pilot Bates.

While these so-called "white nationalists" are lucky to live in a country that defends their right to voice their awful, incorrect, hateful opinions, the rest of us must use our voices and resources to condemn hate and teach tolerance at every opportunity.

My message to them is simple: you will not win. Our voices are louder and stronger.
There is no white America - there is only the United States of America. You were not born with these hateful views - you can change, grow, and evolve, and I suggest you start immediately.

---

EDIT: re "cracking down on violent protests", as much as I would like to require people to not bring weapons (or masks) to peaceful protests, such a thing cannot be forced. It has to be an organic act.

I would, however, love to see the police do their fucking job and arrest people committing assault. They arrested a few and they importantly arrested the murderer, but it seems like their presence was extremely light and/or they were told to stand down.

Where were they during all of this or any of the other protests that antifa have egged?

Hes just sticking up for his base. It's the same reason he pretended to not know who David Duke was. Racists and Religious fanatics have always been a big part of the conservative base.
I have no words. Only a day or so after the murder of Heather Heyer, Trump tweets and then removes this:

The man needs medical attention.

In other news, Trump wants to pardon Joe Arpaio!

The only thing Trumps comments prove here, is just how irredeemable this Presidency is.
