What is Desync? (A thorough explanation)

tpapp57, every time I look at your original post I think it is really well written and explained... except for one thing. You do not seem to explain what a desync is, instead you mostly talk about how to work around it/what other developers do etc.

The vital piece of information I'm talking about would be best situated between the 2nd and 3rd paragraph.
Computer specifications:

TL;DR;

Desync is when the client and the server aren't "on the same page". Eg; the client thinks you have moved to another room, and you've issued all the commands to do so. However, the server doesn't know that, and still thinks you're in that other room in a pack of monsters (or it thinks you've been running this whole time you've been reading this post, and are now in a room full of monsters!)

In other words, all Desync is, is the client doing something different than what the server is doing. They both have full views of the "world" and they both simulate it (however, the client does so to a much lesser extent than the server). When the client doesn't have all the data the server does (or the client thinks the server has all the data *it* has), you get desync.
Wow, so do you work at GGG or did you write this looooong defense of HORRIBLE choices by the devs because you were bored??

This always online choice is among the most stupid things I've ever seen on PC gaming...
I've been playing games for a very long time (monochromatic, 5&1/4 inch floppy and such) and bad choices are just that. Devs either LEARN or PERISH...
Now defending stupid choices is compounding the stupidity. Why on God's Earth would someone defend such a thing?
If I wanted to play online I would. But I don't...
Forcing players to do something and then having CRAPPY results by having done so is all the proof needed.
What? Devs don't understand the difference between opinion and FACT?
Oh my God, someone could hack the game... Since the beginning there have always been cheaters. Again, so what? Are the devs on some crusade? Or are they trying to make a game?

Dude, stop defending the indefensible. This online DRM is stupid and is killing the game.

DEVS, WAKE UP!
I'm somewhat of a newbie to Path of Exile (although I've been playing on a different account in the beta before) and currently more of a casual gamer. And this post is just that - the point of view of a gamer who likes playing ARPGs.

After reading through some of the desync threads, I have noticed that there sadly aren't many people able to behave and demand things instead of adressing them in a well worded and well-meant post. There's usually those who adress the problem in a rather aggressive manner and those who respond in the "you don't know what you're talking about let me tell you how this works" but don't offer any kind of insight on possible solutions.
While it's correct that desync is more or less present in every online game, it's nowhere near as noticeable as in this game. And I'm saying this as an experienced, honest gamer who has been playing hundreds of online games since the 90s and PoE easily places in the top 5 in terms of frustration/annoyance related to technical difficulties such as extreme desync.

When I search for "desync in games" on google two out of the first three results are PoE related.

It's a real shame, because the game has alot of potential (it gives me back the feeling of the good old hack&slay ARPGs more than any game has in the past years) and to be honest, it shouldn't have went out of beta stage before a huge problem such as this one has been satisfyingly fixed. At least to a point where those aggressive, bad mannered people stop luring out the pseudo-nerd brigade.

I'm not demanding anything and I'm not doing silly "this game will fail" accusations, I'm just posting my honest opinion. I can still enjoy the game to an extent, but not as much as I'd like to and I'm most likely going to stop playing the game until I see some progress in the case.

I'd really like to support the developers, but as long as there isn't a promising solution posted in the News section, I sadly can't bring myself to do that.

Still, props to you guys for creating a potentially great game from gamers, for gamers. I'll surely keep an eye on this one.
Just desynced on Vaal in Merciless as a duelist, resycned in time to see myself get turned into gravy. Welcome to Standard league.

I read the OP and seriously, I've played many, many multiplayer games. Including Dota 2 at a top tier level for years and sure you might get a lag spike once every month or so. But considering the fact that 99% of the time Dota 2 actually perfectly and consistently syncs 10 players combat against each other without any hiccups whatsoever says a lot. The simple fact that I can, in the course of 1 game reliably decide about 1,000+ times to counter other players moves, attacks and spells with less than 0.5 second margin says a lot. Especially considering that both games are F2P.

Now I'm forced to abandon playing melee that I enjoy the most and am relegated to playing ranged classes.

Get your act together. Do something. Call Valve or similar companies and ask for tips. Invest a couple months wages and hire an expert consultant to sort this out. You can't just leave it like this.

Something is dreadfully wrong when you know that you won't lose your HC character due to any fault of your own. But eventually and inexorably to the real overlord of Wraeclast: Shitty Netcode.

Note the excuse "there are a ton of things happening at the same time and an incredible amount of players online etc" doesn't apply in my case. I was solo running Vaal so apart from my character, Vaal and maybe 1 soldier the entire instance was empty. Also considering it happened at 2am CET I really doubt the servers were being overloaded.

Dota 2 has been launched a couple of months ago and the beta is barely 2 years old, but you played at a top tier level for years.I wish i had your "skillz"

When you've played Dota1 you can faceroll in Dota2.

And every other online game has NO FUCKING DESYNC LIKE HELL.
Onlineshooter? Na, lets have a nearly lag free game with 64 players, no problem.
Make
Spectral Throw
great again

Wall-o-text... first off i have NEVER desync'd the way i do in this game on D2 , Gw2 , WoW , insert every single game known to man here , only this game. if i rubber band every few hours once or twice ok i understand...but every 5-10 mins i get lagg killed? fix the bullshit and stop making excuses. Btw amazing game other than Desync
Good jooob!

I would rather have to wait 40 ms before my character does an action (which is so low it's unnoticeable) rather than have desync. That's how other games do it and nobody complains, unless they have like 500 ms ping which would destroy their gameplay anyway, no matter what system is used.
