What is Desync? (A thorough explanation)

Path of exile feels like a p2p game

it shouldn't

They need to do the client master sync thing and enable vac, problem solved

"If GGG tried to synchronize the client and server even just once every second across all the clients currently playing it would overwhelm their available bandwidth by orders of magnitude."

nuff said, that means desync will NEVER get fixed, cuz it costs too much

I would rather have to wait 40 ms before my character does an action (which is so low it's unnoticeable) rather than have desync. That's how other games do it and nobody complains, unless they have like 500 ms ping which would destroy their gameplay anyway, no matter what system is used.

I agree with that.

In my case, ping is usually 20-50 ms, so it would be perfectly fine without the GGG network choice.

When I'm hosted by a distant server (I guess, it's quite rare) my ping is 300ms... which is hardly enjoyable even with this coding that should allow to play.

Conclusion : the netcode fails in both cases (in my experience). Desync breaks immersion, and high latency is still horrid.

Moreover, when I read "strategy games = slow", I wonder if you have played Starcraft 2 once ? Come on, gameplay is far more accurate and fast than PoE.
As OP pointed out, GGG chose to make tactics more important/more noticeable. And then desynch obliterates one's use of tactics. Ex:

Slip out behind this wall, pew pew, slip back, pot, slip out, pew pew, oh wait desynched into the middle of the room, dead.

The mechanics of the game make we want to play HC. The realities make me /facepalm in cruel/merc.
Does this mean that GGG has no intention of trying to do anything about the desync?
I do not know if it is on my end or something by here in the last 2 weeks or so the desyncs have just gotten worse and worse. It is reaching the point were i can not just ignore it anymore. I can not seem to finde any newer updates on their intentions to go about this problem.

In Diablo 3, for example, you have a less extreme version of this method. Enemies can overlap and move through each other which makes pathing about a billion times easier. Your attacks are big enough that where the enemy is on the server doesn't really matter because he'll get hit regardless. The areas are rather large with plenty of room to move and few obstructions (even the narrow corridors really aren't very narrow). Your character's positioning simply doesn't matter a whole lot in general. Even in Diablo 3 you can desync and rubberband. Often, there's so much going on on screen that you don't notice or it doesn't matter because you always hit everything anyway.

If this is the case, why not simplify the pathing with unit overlapping?
I'm no expert on these technical subjects, but as the OP seems quite biased, I find it hard to blindly believe that it's simply IMPOSSIBLE to fix something so utterly gamebreaking.

I would like a thorough explanation without it having to constantly point out that other games don't have these issuess because they're inferior in some way. Preferably from someone unbiased.

Using pathing/general complexity as an excuse also sounds a little fishy. I can get desyncs while being in a room with only my character and a single boss, without even using any abilities.

I'm pretty sure I would rather have mobs/players stacking than get killed by desync every fifth minute.

Being at the mercy of the game's issues must be the very definition of artifical difficulty, and I would never touch hardcore with the game's current problems.

I like the game. I play it often, and want it to succeed, but this shit doesn't fly.
Just saw how kongor died. Desync is really something that's becoming more and more irritating to see.
„I don't give a fuck if it was his tenth anniversary with his goddamn neckbeard...“
„If they think I'm going to let them sweep this pizza guy thing under the rug...“
No mod action. Business as usual.
So it`s a GGG strategy the reason of desync?
So change the god**** strategy for crying out loud.
use VAC u already got steam under you, c`mon this game is too awsome to die because of this sh**.
i have yet to play a game that has as much desync as PoE lol... i know you can't do much about it but the desync just ruins it for me, would have been my favorite game otherwise

lmfao at the guy above me saying use VAC

There's nothing tactical about trying to funnel enemies through a narrow door only to find yourself on the same side of the door as the enemies. I sincerely hope GGG considers "dumbing down" the game by opening up areas and removing random obstructions on the ground. Random obstructions on the ground are extremely inconsistent and visually confusing, as half of the random crap on the ground is pathable and the other half is not; there is almost no way to tell before hand unless you memorize each object variation.
