Death Penalties

Sacred 2 had a very interesting mechanism, going the opposite way from death penalty: a survival bonus (http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php5/Sacred_2:Survival_Bonus)

To summarize: to more you kept playing without dying, the greater your survival bonus. The SB increased your base stats, damage, and MF. To counterbalance those benefits, it also increased mob level (relatively to yours).

The death penalty was quite simple: your SD is reset to zero. Not very punishing with a low SB (at the start of the game), but quite damaging when your SB could reach 50%+.

Good idea. Bonus for survival instead of death penalty. The bonus can be totally different than in Sacred but idea is really great

This!!!
Upon death you are re-spawned in the last town you visited.
A marker or flag is left at the place you died.
You dont lose gear or exp.
You cannot gain anymore exp until you reclaim the flag / reach the marker of your death.
You are free to go wherever you want,, but gain no exp until you reclaim the flag / marker.

This is a cool idea, or at least receive a reduced (50%?) EXP or something.

I'd like it even more if the "flag" was attached the the monster that killed you. And if it's a monster that you just can't take down (IE Cold witch vs. cold immunity...) You just gotta wait and make a new instance, or go elsewhere, or get a friend and beat it down. lol

Edit: This doesn't really, in your or my iteration, really give any penalty for dying to a boss. so I think if this is implemented, a minor loss of EXP should be had, and recover some/all of it when you kill the flag-holder.

Ooo, or buff the monster temporarily when they kill a character to make it tougher on your teammates when you died

^Any item drop ? Example healing/mana/ else potion in belt ...
And if I die, then I quit game and relogin, what'll happen ?
If penalty per death not harsh, boss fighting has no interesting, just hit>run>town p>buy heal+mana>back and hit>r...without thinking+ making some plan for fight+ escape.
I'm waiting for a beta key. If you dont have anyone to invite, please just invite me.

Under my idea for death penalty you will still gain no exp until you claim the marker / flag of your previous death.
Logging out does not reset your death.

This doesn't work: Instances are only active for 15 minutes, including any item/flag/monster/etc.
OK..didnt know instances are only active for 15 mins..

So..
If you log out after death without claiming flag / reaching marker of death,, you do lose X% of exp..

You have 15mins to reach last death site / claim flag or suffer the X% exp loss..
(If thats how the instances work)

i think it is a good idea, if you wait 15 mins for the instance to reset then the penalty be cancelled, i know i won't wait

You should revive as a zombie/ghost and you need to reach your soul before you lose your humanity.

If you don't make it in time, your gear becomes cursed and cannot be used until you visit a church or some traveling cleric.
