Death Penalties

Death penalties are going to seem really harsh once resistance penalties are put into the game. You're going to lose a lot of your player base if things stay the way they are now.
I think the current death penalty is fine. I really don't want to think about how many lvl's I've lost had I not experimented / rushed / not paid attention the 300 or so times I've died on my main. I do think 15% is really harsh, but part of that is because I'm running 60ish maps at lvl 68, so I'm sure it won't feel as bad to make up the xp once act 3 is out.

I really don't want to see the buff streak type systems in POE. Obviously there are up sides to such systems, but I really hated Neph Valor in D3, and I think something like that just wouldn't fit in POE with maps and the ability to load clean instances of the same zone over and over. along the same lines, I think lingering death debuffs would just be spiking the ball on someone for trying something different. It's bad enough to already loose 15% / 3 hrs of grinding / whatever.
Please please keep the death penalty as it currently is in default.
The penalty is fine while you're questing. Even at 15% you can get your XP back pretty easily <lvl 62 by running pyramid or felshrine. Sometimes you lose some game progress if you forget to set a portal but that's your own fault. It's set so you can't lose a level so if you're concerned about conserving XP you can always finish out your current level before a boss fight.

The thing that needs to be looked at is 15% XP loss at end game when the only content is maps. The penalty goes from deterrent to punishing (and IMO unfun) when a death costs a precious map portal and eats away exp that you can't go anywhere but other hard-won maps to regain. I'm hoping when Act III is introduced and Merciless removed the final death penalties will be 0% - 5% - 10%.

I hate these debuff after dying suggestions. My reaction to that sort of death penalty is to log off my broken character and find something else to play. Sometimes permanently.
Open beta is still BETA.
I've died a handful of times at high levels (78+).

Does it suck? Yes. Was I pissed? Sure.

But the death penalty "allowed" me to get the feeling to be upset when my character died. Which, in all honesty. Is a good thing.

If I didn't care about dying, why would I spec defense at all?

Recently, I died at 81. That was 3 days of playing. A lot of playing. But I still kept pushing forward and attempted to learn from my mistakes.

Death should be punished in a game. It always have been.

Keep the death penalty. If you die so much that its really a problem. Learn from it, and adjust your build or your playstyle. Somethings wrong.
XP penalty - it can get annoying on higher levels, specialy that the exp curve is made in a way, that at longer run you will loose more than gain even if you die rarely.

Item loss - GGG already said no to this, its to annoying aswell.

Debuffs to player/buffs to monsters - weaken your character = get killed again, you died while you were at full power so there is no sense in doing debuffs.

IMO there should be something annoying for player upon death, but dont overdo it GGG, it should be something relativly fast to do for player and shouldnt effect him on longer run.
You shouldnt loose anything expect a bit of your time, that should be penalty, but how should it be done?

Make them watch 30-60sec commercial, GGG get money, money means more content, people who die loose 30-60 sec of life! PURRFECT! Everybody is happy :D

Why we even need a death penalty is beyond me... Isn't it enough every living and dead thing out there is trying to kill you??? Now you die and get a penalty??? *rolls eyes* You just nerfed half the game, now you want to add more... sigh... I think I want to vomit after reading this....
The Pope quit, a meteor fell on Russia, an
asteroid came close to the earth, there's snow
in Arizona, star wars and star trek have the
same director! Who the hell is playing jumanji?

Read the above.

Without it there is no reason to spec defensively. Glass cannons rule all. Bad game design.

May I ask, what is the death penalty atm? in the default league
Dont know if this was brought up but i liked in diablo hardcore where you could allow your teammates to loot your corpse, if they and you accept the option.
Smoother than Smooth.
