Death Penalties

Yeah I'm not a fan of the heavy exp loss. I usually just level up before attempting the harder bosses, when you die far away from a waypoint its bad enough but then the huge exp loss on top of that can get pretty frustrating.

edit: also really like that orb of revival idea.

Experience lost panalty can be good.
Disappointed in D3, then wanna play POE with friend!:P.
hmmm I don't know, I kinda like the system you have now. If you die you have to fight your way back, or you could be smart and always keep a portal out. When I play I really really don't wanna die simply because I'll have to go all the way back :D

I agree with that as it may force players to be wise about town portals scrolls and such items.
By the way, how much time should a town portal still on place?
And to prevent town portal's regeneration abuse, i suggest make regeneration on town not being instantly and potions refill also not being instantly as players would spend more time on town to regenerate lost life/mana/pot-charges but still less time than spent outside town. But if a player dies make him return back on town after some seconds (20-40) with full life, mana and pots and also put a timer on respawn.
This post has more than one hundred pages and I have not read it all. But i had an idea.

Reset the entire quest.

Example: In the quest you need to get three different parts of a weapon that are in different ways and kill a monster that is also in a completely different path. If you die to the last Monster, you will have to restart the entire quest. Get the 3 parts of that weapon AGAIN.

So i think this will give for the default players a bit of what hardcore players has.

Its a penalty have to go all the way back.

I hate any kind of penalty for dying. Just the fact that I have to spawn and walk back to where I was - is enough of a penalty (especially if half the level is already cleared out...)

I agree (mostly) with Dicos, for single player I would prefer, that if I die, that the level I was on gets regenerated again. Forces me to make a working build to progress. Not sure about resetting the entire quest.

Not sure how to implement that in multiplayer though.

Exp penalty and fight the way back is absolutley perfect.

like it is already ;)

is it the higher the difficulty gets the more exp is lost ?
I am not sure but right now the Death Penalty from this Game is like this:
Oh i died, pfft what ever!
and that on Merciless!

I played a Game where Death is very unforgiving like losing all of your Equipment including Money and Exp plus you got a Death Penalty too, like half HP for a given Duration.
Ohhh i think that was D2!
but that was not Really Good...

But maybe this Game needs something new, something really Challenging and never seen before in any other Game, something like if you Die, you have the Choice to Fight in Hell for your lost Exp, also like this example:

You died and have lost 15% of your Exp, for a "your Level" Character you must Kill "To-Kill List" in Hell, now you have the Choice!

Lets Fight those Mobs in Hell!
You get Spawned in a Hell Town there you could Buy or Sell some Stuff and you get your "to-kill List" and a Red Portal to a Random Hell Like Dungeon (Imagine the Creepiest of the Creepy a really Bloody Hell of a Nightmare xD).
There you must Fight the Mobs on your "to-kill List" you must Fight all those Mobs on the List and then you get your 15% Exp Back something like:

To-kill List
Normal Mobs: 50
Magic Mobs: 20
Rare Mobs: 15
Elite Mobs: 5

Those Numbers will increase as your Level Rises(maybe 10% each lvl?), and it should be Handled like a Quest (The Hell Quest) if you have killed your Mobs, a Portal to Normal Town will open.

Rules of The Hell System
-The Hell should´t be too Hard, but Challenging!
-The Hell should be a Quicker way to get your 15% Exp back, but whit a Risk you could lose 30% if you Die in there! (Yea! That would be unforgiving 45% then!)
-If you log out while in Hell (or dc´d) you Spawn in Hell Town!
-The Mobs are all at your Level!
-You can use Portals in Hell but you only get to Hell Town! (They should look Red).

Party

-If you die in Party your Teammate´s get a Choice to Help you there (Those will lose 15% too (Cause they Die!) and after Beating the Hell you and your Team get the exp back).
-Its Saver if you are in a Party cause if you Die (in Hell)! you wont lose 30% exp but you will spawn in Hell Town and you get a Curse for 1H if you die again you lose 30% (remains until done, also after Hell too!).
-You can only make a Hell Party while in Hell Town (if you whisper a Living Player he will see something like"Takahiro´s Wisper from Hell"), then he know that i am in Hell right now xD and if some living Player will wisper you to Hell i see something like"Dude´s wisper from the Living"

Items and exp

-You dont get any Items there (or low chance of Obtaining Hell Items?).
-Hell Items Could be New Currency? (Can be discussed?)
-You can´t use The Hell to Train! (also you only get your 15% exp back after defeating all of those Mobs).

Lets Retreat and lose 15% exp!
pfft, what ever!
And you wont get Nightmares of Hell xD

Damn my Ideas are Flowing!

And how is that? could it be possible to Implement something Big and New as Death Penalty?
Takahiro the Inferno Necromancer!
My Army of Death is Filled whit Tons of TNT:)!
Personally i consider the XP penalty alone to be too forgiving, altough in higher levels, >80-90 it might correctly punishing.

However, you had that in D2, with a repair bill which you can't have here, so you'd need to have another penalty, just to make sure you're on your toes.

Maybe :

XP penalty on gems aswell, or even a -1 level change on a random one.

Larger XP penalty instead of 5/10/15, maybe extreme values like 20/35/50.

Personally, it won' matter for me considering i will only play hardcore mode from open beta onwards, but it has to be punishing, otherwise it's just ignore'able.
I don't think 10% is too forgiving when you enter a area and 5 or 6 mobs with flicker strike hit you at the same time. I can generally handle majority of mobs without an issue due to the shadows guerilla warfare style fighting, but when I do die, it's noticeable. And usually when I do die, it's in an area that I'll more than likely continue to die due to the mobs skill set up.

So say I walked into the ghost ship area, and died immediately due to flicker strike. I come back, same thing happens deeper in the tunnel, and again, and again. If I died 4 times in the ghost ship, I just lost ATLEAST 40% of my exp bar, and you'll probably only walk out of there with gaining maybe 2 bars of exp.
