Suggestion: Skill Tree Markup, Planning, and Summarization
I support V1 of this idea. Should be relatively easy to create a transparent overlay that would go over the passives tree. Just store the image file locally.

" An image might be overkill. Can get by with num_selected*log2(num_nodes) data in a binary blob locally (or on the server, per character). This is only a few kilobytes per character if the entire tree is selected, and obviously less if fewer are selected. Also, doesn't need to validate that each node is connected since it's just an overlay. |

Great idea

I see that the website canvas/javascript has path searching, and also finds similar items in the passive skill tree.
However, would it be possible that such a feature be available inside the game ? ( And considering your class and already allocated points ). Also, it would be nice to be able to revert changes just done by using a "cancel" button on the skill tree (after you exited the tree they become permanent), to reduce the effect of miss-clicks. Never give up, never surrender ! Last edited by wavetrex#1459 on Jun 6, 2012, 2:24:44 AM

Nine month bump. Still relevant, still no GGG posts. Could use some more eyes and/or be moved to the Suggestions forum. :O

Instead of just the overlay idea, I think that having an in-game skill tree planner with an overlay markup option would be very useful. It'd be much easier to have access to the planner in-game as opposed to on the web site. Maybe have a separate tab or something on the passive tree screen ("Planned passive tree") that allows you to make more tabs underneath, listed as "1, 2, 3, etc... planned builds."
Also having a displayed list of the total current stats right next to your stats obtained from your planned path sounds like a good idea (only display the exact stats listed on the nodes/keystones to keep it simple). This would help everyone, not just beginners. Hopefully some of the suggestions from this thread get implemented in the future! Starting from scratch in open beta.

this is a fantastic idea. it would be of great use so I wouldn't have to stop the slaying to allocate points. I wouldn't use an auto allocation function in case i changed my mind on a node but it should be an option. this would be great for races too, so you could just plan your build beforehand and than go. If this was a micro transaction it would still be a must have for me.

Every time I look at this thread and notice GGG hasn't said anything, I turn toward the camera and shed a single tear.
This is really too good an idea to ignore for too much longer. |

We definitely want to improve the passive tree, improve planning, provide stat summaries.
We just aren't likely to comment on something unless we also get to say exactly what we are doing, and when. (Or when we think you have it wrong). When we do make changes, we'll let you know. We do read all the threads, but we don't comment on everything! | |
Bump!
