Rain of Arrows
Rain of Arrows with Life Gain on Hit and some attack speed makes you feel invincible.
Would work best with Point Blank Shot. |

How many arrows does it shoot ?
I understand the 80% damage effectiveness but currently, without using the skill, there's no way to have an idea how much damage it will do. The gem description should give more details. Shadow : Covenant Pulser (504561)
Ranger : 12 charges Frenzy Archer (65154), Dual Claws Elemental ST (709126) Witch : Self-Cast Arc Tanky Witch (770185), AoF EK/Bear trap (863970) Templar : Frenzy + AB/Fireball "Cast on Crit" Wander (611200) Marauder : Death Oath Staff User (498864) |

It's just an AoE attack. One shot. The arrows are purely visual.

" That still doesn't answer the question. How much dmg does it do? Is it based on weapon dmg? How is it calculated? Shadow : Covenant Pulser (504561)

...
It requires a bow (like all bow skills), it doesn't list its damage (like all weapon skills), it gains %Physical Damage from skill levels (also common on weapon skills), and it has 80% Damage Effectiveness (meaning it deals 80% damage), and the Gem flat-out says it's an Attack. Damage Effectiveness is a modifier that is applied after all other player-side damage modifiers. Actually, on that note; the Gem doesn't list it as a Projectile skill; it has always benefited from Projectile bonuses though. Last edited by Vipermagi#0984 on Nov 23, 2012, 8:13:12 PM

Ok, thanks.
When I think about it, it was a silly question. Not sure why but even though I knew it was an attack, I was expecting more details about the damage on the gem. But you are right, attack gems usually do not provides such details. It's simply based on integer damage from weapon and other items. I've always wondered why Rain of Arrows has 80% damage effectiveness when it already has the drawback of the time you must wait for the arrows to land, i use this skill on my ranger, and making this time short requires a lot of very good gear, so it isn't easy at all to minimize this drawback.
I don't really understand why a second drawback is necessary, maybe this is the reason this skill is underused? I carve and sell real animal skulls, check out my work here: https://www.instagram.com/victorseiche/

Split Arrow also has 80% damage effectiveness, and can't hit as many enemies as Rain of Arrows per shot. *shrug*

" yes, but splite arrow can travel further and pierce enemies too, rain just lands in a certain area. It's my area attack skill on my 77 ranger and having used it a lot, i really think this skill could use a buff. Needs to root targets randomly and temporarily, or inflict greater damage (with an increasing delay) on targets that are farther away, as those'd be harder to hit, the arrows would be coming down harder, and it would be a good incentive to actually use this skill ever while playing the game.
As is I'd rather just fire split arrows with the piercing shots node/gem, far more effective than rain of arrows but a lot less cool looking. Actually, on that note, split arrow is also a horrible skill, primarily because it is vastly outdone by lightning arrow, explosive arrow and even poison arrow in its function. If you ask me we have no reason to use split arrow or rain of arrows in any event unless the other 3 skill gems I just mentioned are unavailable, they are just straight up worse in every way. Maybe if split arrow behaved similar to strafe in D2 and fired 3 arrows at 3 different targets, then it might be useful (and actually be kind of fun to use) instead of just a really bad autoattack. |
