Stringing on the Kickstarter customer, or Why this game needs to die

Man, sometimes I feel like the only old timer that feels like the game has gotten better.

About crowdfunding and expectations, dunno if you follow the 'Unbended' project, new ARPG from makers of Sacred 1 and 2. Well, it started as a crowdfunded project, however, it seems devs abandoned that idea for the time being, here's their announcement:

"
Dear UNBENDED supporters of the first hour,

we’d like to thank you for your trust and support with which you’ve showed us that you believe in us and our project. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been discussing a lot about the concrete shape for the development of UNBENDED in the coming year, and we’ve come to the conclusion that, right now, crowdfunding is not the right way.

This is why all noble donators will receive their money back within the next few days.

The following reasons are the deciding factors:

- We’re currently in negotiations for a lasting funding for UNBENDED.

- We’ve noticed that, due to the large number of supporters, we’ve also imposed a certain obligation on ourselves to regularly report about the project’s state. This is regularly putting pressure on us and the bottom line is that it costs more time than we currently have.

- We know that for the majority of potential supporters, it’s too early in the project. The day will come, but until then, there’s much to do for us.

What’s the future for UNBENDED now?

For us, this decision is rather a reason for calm and relaxation; we can apply ourselves to the development considerably less stressed. And of course, we will continue to inform you about all important news on our website, in our official forum and on the social media channels.

What happens with your gravestones, NPCs and villages?

That’s our present to you: Everything will be kept, your gravestones, NPCs, villages and keys. You are the supporters that have been with us from the beginning and that you’ll stay.

Will there be a possibility to support the projects again at a later date?

That is possible; we’re not ruling that out. When there will be the possibility, you will already be able to see and “touch” UNBENDED, though. Only this way, we can satisfy both sides.

We realize that not every supporter will be happy with our decision, but in the end, it won’t change a thing. Aetherra will arise, the story of UNBENDED will be told and we will develop that ARPG on which our hearts are attached. And that, truly, are bright prospects.

We wish you happy holidays and a happy, healthy and successful new year.

Your thankful UNBENDED team

See, it's a very sensitive topic, how much of it exactly is trust and goodwill and how much is pure investment you'd like to see returned in some way. As you can see in the announcement, the reasons for backing out look a bit flimsy and the real ones probably lie in the other direction. If you let people invest in your project, how much exactly are you expected to alter your work according to their wishes? A lot? A bit? Not at all?

It's no wonder they decided to cut at the knot, Sacred games always were a bit of an oddball and fans would probably be fairly vocal about design decisions they're used to making at their own discretion. In the end they ptrobably came to the conclusion they have better hope of making the game they envisioned by going through a publisher or a sponsor than with crowdfunding.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

As I said in my exceptionally long post, yes - he is entitled to feel that way. Even justified. But it's still not the right way to feel.

Another thing to consider is GGG may or may not want to do X - but found out that X is either impractical or unattainable (permanently, or currently) and so were forced to do Y.

Who was it who said never attribute to malice what can be explained by ineptitude?

Sidenote: I doff my hat at you, sir. Your earlier post in this thread was very eloquent.

Snipped out a lot, because we're getting long winded! I'm not sure I agree with the premise that how Scrotie feels is wrong. I obviously don't feel that way, so it'd be wrong for me, but to say it's just plain wrong isn't a wagon I can get on.

And, when it comes down to it, that seems to be the issue people have with Scrotie's post/feelings/etc. They don't think Scrotie's right to feel as he does, and can't get into his mindset to appreciate it. Scrotie's feelings are his and they are right for him, and he's well within his rights to seek out/try to inspire people that feel/think as he does.

And GGG built up an expectation of communication, which in general they are very, very good at. So in the "forced to do Y" scenario, people like Scrotie (and myself really) would expect GGG to post saying so.

Hanlon said it. Someone around here has it as their .sig.

And thanks. I couldn't snip the bit that feeds my ego :)

In many ways the game has improved. I have watched the graphics get better and better. The early muddy washed out artwork is gone. And I really like the strong boxes. Expect for the instant death that happens when the monsters spawn and you desync to death.

But what makes the game better for some like the masters doesn't work for everyone else.

I was happy to finally get to the maps playing a two handed inferno blow build, but ranged is still ten times more powerful and easier to play.

Part of it is a core part of the game that they clearly stated from the beginning. They expect us to trade.

With thousands of players getting drops, someone is supposed to get your dream item and you are suppose to trade for it.

Except by making trade central to advancement, it alienated a large pool of players.

So they made the masters to help us craft better. Nice concept, but I gave up on my masters at level 6. I solo only and the timed missions suck. So I don't do them any more.

PvP will always be a small group. There are too many PvP games dedicated to it for it to be anything more than a side note. But it took a lot of resources away from the core game to do it.

Worst yet, I don't want to play any more again. I tried ranged, but I don't enjoy it. The content feels stale to me currently.

Currently Act 4 is the new hope. But like the masters, I don't expect much.

Forgive the ramble. Doing this on my phone and have to keep going back to fix autocorrect.

I hear this often but no one has bothered to explain how it took anything from the core game. Forgot who exactly, I think Chris said that it was one dude who wanted to work on PVP and they had nothing big planned for 1.3.

I don't feel like we missed important updates with 1.3, nor do I feel like the addition of PVP took away from my PVE experience at all.

Ah, yes, nice point. It's a bit strange that a game feature that is supposed to help solo self found players gets balanced for parties and price of the sole attractive master mod gets balanced for traders.

I'm sorry, I must of missed that announcement. But I still believe PvP will never be more than a side show for a small few.

And to date there has only been one feature I truly resent and that is the nemesis mods in standard.

All other content added from the leagues can be avoided if you want. Corrupted? Don't go in. Boxes? Don't open them. Shrines? Go around.

But nemesis mods? You're fucked. They should be limited to mods to the other items or areas you can avoid without missing the core game.

...which got changed to make it much easier. This league I've been skipping masters in the wild, missing dailies from rerolling, took a month off and still my masters are all about 1/2 to lvl 8. Which I don't even need any lvl 8 mods so as far as I see it, my masters are done.
