Unfortunately, we cannot restore any items lost to theft. One of the most important things about Path of Exile is its online economy, and if we performed restorations on demand then the economy would be flooded with duplicated items. We've seen this in other games (where the game companies restore compromised items and create a massive economic problem in the game).

If someone compromises your account and deletes your characters, we’re currently unable to restore these characters. We are working on changing the game so that deletions are "soft" rather than "hard", which will allow us to restore deleted characters easily. If their items are stolen, however, then the character will be empty. This feature will be available in the future but is not ready yet!

I am very sorry that our policy is no help if you've lost items or characters. I sincerely wish that I could restore them for you, but to do so would undermine one of the most important aspects of the game. If you have been compromised, I strongly suggest:
  • First, make sure your computer is malware free. A reformat would be the best bet. If you follow the following steps but still have malware, the attacker will just take your password again.
  • Make sure that your email account is secure. Change its password! Set up two-factor (i.e. cellphone) authentication with your email provider. If the email is not secure, the attacker can still steal your account
  • Set a Path of Exile password that is different from any other password you have used before. Make it long and complex.
  • Don’t enter your password anywhere except the official site and the game client. Make sure the site says "Grinding Gear Games Limited" when you click the lock icon next to the address.
  • Don’t download untrusted software or click untrusted links.

We take security very, very seriously. The website and game client both use secure encrypted sessions to handle logins. We don’t store credit card information on our servers. Passwords are stored hashed and salted. Even the backups of your data are encrypted so that thieves can't get anything if they steal the backups.

Please take steps to make sure your accounts are safe. It pains me greatly every time I read about lost items that we can't replace. With some development time on our end (as outlined above) and good security on the part of our users, your accounts will be much more secure and the item sales sites won't be able to steal our items.

I bet 1 chaos orb that all the hacked accounts got hacked due to either visiting shady websites or clicking on what they should not click on videos form youtube or by downloading hacks that have keyloggers or other malware in them.

Edit.
@GGG staff: in retrospect, this morning while checking the onlines, when the game loaded up instead of the regular welcome message on the login screen, there was a bunch of HTML code. Like viewing the source of a webpage. I believe it has nothing to do with the hacks but u never know. Should have taken a screen cap. Sorry for not doing it.

this code in the welcome box has happened to me 5 or 6 times lately.

This code is html, it is literally unrelated. It is used for formatting webpages, if you would like to see this, click any where on this page and hit view source. You will see similar code if you compare them.
probably some low security fansite got compromised and he got same pw or he bought powerlevel service.
you have to know: if people create threads about being hacked or banned they lie.
they lie the shit out of it.
i'm not kidding. look around in some "forums".
the only advice you always get is to lie the shit out of it and never admit anything on offical forums so you have a small chance of getting your account back.

never admit your password was not unique. never admit you bought powerlevel service.

This. Coming to the forums at all is fairly worthless. There is no reason for anyone to believe you because it is protocol for people who have been hacked to deny every possibility out of the slim hope of compensation (and, in most cases, it is the individual users fault). Not to mention that you also get others coming in making similar claims, either out of hopes of getting something or merely to troll. If you are hacked, take it to GGG. Posting on the forums is only going to get you trolled, this way and that.

Just to give a recent example, the absolutely rampant D3 reports of hacked authenticators and session hacks all turned out to be junk.

Nail on the head.
It's obvious at this point that it is GGG fault and they don't want to admit they have a security issue with a game they are hoping to release soon.

Are you really still here? GTFO, you have no knowledge whatsoever on this subject and only are trying to troll everyone here with illegitimate issues. You are such a scumbag.

Of course I'm still here, I explained very clearly that I don't want anyone to eat the garbage you and a few others are spewing, trying to blame GGG. I don't give two shits if you admit to believing anything I say, because we BOTH know you are full of shit.

And in the end, no matter what you say, I always win this argument, because your shit got stolen, and mine didn't. All because I know how to secure my account. You got tricked because you are a stupid fucker :)
