Vaal Skill Gem Retrospective

Was it ever considered to disable Vaal gems in Coward's Trial map?

Or was the design of this map ever considered when making Vaal gems?

It seems, to me, that these two designs completely contradict each other. The whole point of the Coward's Trial map is lost with Vaal gems.

Cowards Trial came out before Vaal Gems were probably even a concept.

Imho some Vaal Gems are ok ( Summon skeletons, cyclone, auras), some should be reworked to be more interesting/viable, but they should not function as the normal version until fully charged, no.
Instead they should not lose their souls upon entering a new area, though. That's my main issue with Vaal skills, sometimes I use them, just before exiting an area, on trash mobs or even nothing, and it sucks big time.

If they don't lose souls, you could cheese bosses pretty hard. Just TP, go to the coast and fill up, then go back and unleash the Vaal Skill again.

Well said.
This was a great read, thanks guys. It's really appreciated.

I've got to say personally I liked the idea of Vaal Charges with punitive effects better.
I do like the Vaal Gems the way they are, but it seems to me like you had a great idea there and then didn't use it. This way the gems would, imo, have fitted the sacrifice theme much better - because you really don't sacrifice much with the Vaal Gems as they are now - you'd kill the monsters anyway.

Regardless, I love some Vaal Skills very much. Vaal Spark and Vaal Summom Skeletons are just great.

I think they make sense.
It gives a nice bit of flavour once in a while and you don't have to use them if you want to min/max the game. (apart from the vaal orb)

The nice part about it is that you can have insane skills and they are not game breaking. So I don't mind seeing new ones popping up in updates.

I'm wondering, how is act IV going along? Would like to hear an update on that.

Cheers!

I think theyre far from posting updates on act 4 and besides too many would start whining once they read about it because there are always whiners. ;)

I'm well aware of that, not only does the fact not void my point, it's actually part of my point and reflected in the wording.

Dude, WTF?

How would vaal gems work in there? Its just 1 map you can use them properly. So what?

Its not like people make entire builds around them, or do they?

Against my better judgement, I'll respond, although I'm sure you just troll constantly.

The design of the Coward's trial is to have ever streaming monsters, to threaten you with being overcome. Then, at the end of each stage, a necro will begin reviving. At the end of the last stage, the necro mass-AoE revives.

Vaal cyclone will suck all monsters to you as they spawn and make short work, removing any ranged threat. Vaal DD will cause massive AoE damage, kill anything alive and remove ALL corpses that could be revived.

There are so many monsters that one Vaal use is guaranteed to charge up to use again.

As I said, Vaal gems completely go against the point of this map.
Casually casual.
