Every time I see "introducing a new Vaal Skill Gem" in Patch Notes or Previews, I get extremely let down.. And many agree with me.
Vaal Skills are COMPLETELY useless, and meant PURELY as a "noob trap" to capture the interest of LoL-Babies who want an "Ultimate" Ability. Post Normal Difficulty, Vaal Gems are pointless, and most builds cannot fit them, and the Supports they'd require, into their Sockets.
My suggestion is to either outright stop releasing Vaal Skill Gems because they are useless, OR DRASTICALLY buffing Vaal Skill Gems but PREVENTING them from being linked with Support Gems.
This would allow people to use Vaal Gems, but not be forced to waste a 4L for it to shine, and would see more Vaal Gem use. Besides, how can you justify wasting not one, but FOUR, Gem Slots for a Skill you only use 1-3 times AT MOST per Zone/Map? You can't! You use Curses more than that, and they only occupy 1-3 Gem Slots. (Don't need to Curse easy mobs, so you don't use it every Pack obviously..)

i hope they dont do away with vaal gems but i would love it if they made it where vaal gems cannot be linked but are super buffed. cause gem slots do become a major problem for something used maybe once or twice

You underestimate the power of the Vaal gems that clear the entire screen, mostly Vaal Cyclone (but potentially also the weaker Vaal Detonate Dead or Vaal Fireball or some others). Once it's charged, you gather three to four packs of mobs, hit relevant defensive flasks (Granite/Jade/Topaz/whatever is appropriate for the area), and wipe the whole screen out, and your Vaal gem is well on the way to being ready for reuse.
My only issue is running out of hotbar slots for them.

Except your normal main attacking Skill can accomplish the same thing, without having to kite or put yourself into a dangerous situation...

This. That is how they should have been from the beggining.
It is pointless to use Vaal Spectral Throw on your main Spectral Throw build if you need to waste an entire item slot for it to be somewhat useful.
I really hope GGG makes them like this when the new expansion comes up (to keep vaal gems relevant)

Sure they'll become an uber version of normal gems and will cost way more, but hey, almost every Vaal gem costs 1-2 chaos at the moment (unless there are brand new Vaal gems which always costs more the early days), and finding them would actually be something to be proud of, instead of the currently typical "bleh, got another Vaal Spectral Throw"

Or they can remove Vaal Gems (they'd become Legacy in Permanent Leagues, like the IIQ Gem) and thus remove the 50% chance for Vaal Gems to drop from Vaal Vessels effectively doubling the Sacrifice drop rate to compensate for their reduced spawn rate post 1.1. Summon skeletons begs to differ. Further, and you may be surprised by this, but some people use them for fun.

Firstly, I really enjoy articles like this explaining the thought process that went in to various aspects of the game.
Secondly, Vaal gems definitely are NOT completely useless as some complain and have been a lot of fun to use. Yes, it takes some juggling but that's not only part of the challenge of choosing to use these more powerful yet limited gems but kind of the point as well.
Even though I haven't used every single Vaal skill just yet, in Ambush I've thoroughly enjoyed using Vaal Spectral Throw (linked with lesser multiple projectiles). Vaal Double Strike is entertaining too while watching the massive explosions of Vaal Detonate Dead is simply a blast! In addition to that my level 61 summoner in Merciless standard league has made great use of the Vaal Storm Call to assist her minions with crowd control.
Finally, I do not believe these should become legacy or nerfed in any way. Perhaps a lot less common but I like Vaal gems and the game mechanics associated with them as they are.
