About shrines and altars

Where is the loot ?
We dont like anything that has nothing to do with loot.
And wasd-controlers arend cutthrought, remember this is Sparta, erm i mean path of exile. It must at least be immensly cutthrought. How about cutting fingers?
Also its way too complex.

You could always remap it all on pad to get uber cutthroat feel :>

Yeah, I know it's complex.
So, then, gimme quake in izo view! ;]
I like the ideea of UNNAMED monuments with bonuses/penalties.
"Risk or reward... should I? But what if...??? :O
Maybe I should... hmmm."
The Diablo 1 shrines were perfect, EXCEPT that you could learn the names, and then there was no more risk involved in activating one.
And as I understand, there will be no gold curency, so Scrolls of Wisdom (Identify) could be used as a very valid curency, for items AND shrines.
That would also mean that the said scrolls should drop maybe once every 30 minutes (for scarcity value).
Using a scroll on the shrine would reveal it's name (and thus, it's effects), but it would cost. So you can be a cheap bastard (like me), and prefer to just go for the unknown.

finding an ID scroll once every 30 minutes is abit too much. It would force you to only use an ID scroll on rare/unique stuff. Nobody would bother with lower quality items.

Leave the drop rate for ID scrolls as it is and just give players the option to ID a shrine to take all the risk out of using an 'unknown' shrine.
ID + Shrine :

The ID scroll thing should be something seperate from item-ID.
The taking out the risk-feature from those things is hard to balance. We wont see that many situations where it matters to be able to identify a shrine, the shrineeffect only last for some seconds.
Even if its negative it will be negligible.
It works a little bit against the reason of having unknown shrines.

Perhaps as a low-currency-item drop.

Now if i would encounter 3 shrines at the same place (a small temple) and only had 1 Identifier, it could become intresting to sort out the Zonk of the shrines.

Another thing is what information this IDfier would reveal, only the name, or the whole +3stamina -3intelligence.

This currencyitem would only be usefull if we have killershrines.

What about releasing souls that couldn't move on... some are good and some are evil... at random. You have to fight the evil ones (at least Hero class power) and the good ones will give you buffs that could be permanent (very small +2HP) or a +15% exp for 15 Min... This keeps the game play more original... I wouldn't want to stay trapped on an island that sucks that bad after dying, if a Hardcore player dies they should be able to select "Good" or "Evil" intent so when players find their bodies the spirit when released can give that player's ID a bonus XP item to give to a character they have... because the items they had are now the "Exorcist" player's items!
I love virtual brutality so save it for the Mobs...
I hope this makes more sense:
NPC Trapped Spirits:
Good= Reward for exorcist player
Bad= Challenging Fight for exorcist player

Hardcore player:
Dies
Chooses "Good" or "Evil"
If "Good" gains an EXP vial that will instantly grant 1 level to next character.
If "Evil" is chosen Character gains an EXP vial that will only grant half of a level and they will get to bring one item they had with them to their new character...
Everything else will be lootable.

I hope that makes sense, it adds complexity I think and Players will not know who is Hardcore/NPC or Good/Evil so it is always a gamble that players can't count on! Angry Hardcore people have an option to help their fellow man or bestow an angry Shade of who they once were that will bring misery, thus giving all players (at some level) a REAL Impact on the world and it's surroundings.

Wait you think they should implement that on shrines?
Btw all sounds great except a potion that grants +1 lvl (I don't like the sound of getting levels from something)
You didn't turn out your phone in church?!
It may be God calling.
Careful with that exp vial suggestion. If those are tradeable or even can be held, it will make it quite a bit easier for HC players. They'll just hold them until level 99.

The spirits weren't about shrines, have you ever played Dante's Inferno? well if you have you'd know that there were souls you could absolve or punish these weren't combat creatures they were something to find for exp but I added a twist on it,

These are NOT shrines, they are just lost spirits whether good or evil.

You can't TRADE a Vial of experience.

It is like "Tempting Fate" from Fate by interacting with them, but instead of having many outcomes there are rewards or powerful heroic difficulty fights as the outcomes.

Hardcore Death would spawn creatures carrying what the players were carrying at the time of their doom, they choose whether to take an item and a potential half level of EXP in exchange for other players to fight their Shade or they can choose to leave a good spirit that relinquishes all of it's earthly possessions to the player that Exorcises it and the player that died gains a VIAL of EXPERIENCE WORTH 1 LEVEL (Usable at any time, but NO Vials of EXPERIENCE ARE TRADE ITEMS).

In addition to the Hardcore characters there would also be NPC Lost Souls.
