on topic: "cast when damage taken" sounds a bit over the top. maybe change it to "cast when critical damage taken"?

I hope you realize it's not a 100% chance to cast these, right? :P

let me put it this way: if it's more than 10% in a 20/20 gem - it's too much.
and if it's triggered by Damage Over Time as well, better get rid of the gem altogether.

cast on crit taken - on the other hand - can be 50% or more, without any problems.

there's a dmg threshold AND a % chance to happen ... plus who wants to be taking damage in order to deal their own dmg? A lot of these gems are gimmicks, nothing else

I don't expect it to be popular at all. I for one will never, ever use it. While I don't play hardcore, I hate dying and see dying as a failure. Creating a build or gimmick attack around this gem is planning to fail. Dying/failing should not yield success.

Having said this, I suppose the gem could be interesting in PvP.

ya it must be a pvp thing. Bear trap on death in ctf? I dont see anyone using it in PvE, waste of sockets that could be used for something that keeps you alive.

Median (both 2008 and XL) had "5% chance to cast <skill> when <dmg taken/dealt>" stuff on equipment and charms, and it was crazy-useful.
mainly because it was impossible not to take a hit in that game.
so yeah those are far more than gimmicks, especially when you think about the fact you can pin just about any skill to those gems.

and I'd argue it's not very possible to avoid taking damage in PoE as well, even if there is a threshold.
if there is X damage to be taken in order to trigger the gem, you can bet something will trigger it.

It is cast on player death. We don't really expect this one to be too popular in Hardcore.

Also won't be popular on SC either.. No ones got room for a gem set that kills mobs where they died. The point is to prevent that all together. >.<
animate guardian

if i put gems into his gear, does the guardian use them?
if not is it upgradeable in any other way? does it profit from my auras?

when i create a unique like the leer cast helmet as guardian, does the "affects party members" property of the mask apply to my char?
age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!

Gems currently don't effect the guardians edit*(they cant cast spells). But Chris stated it is being discussed.

Like all minions it profits from auras.

Minions are an extension of you, thus will not receive unique benefits that do not explicitly say "minion"

but this case is new, i'm not my minions minion.

in the leer cast mask's description it says: "you and nearby allies gain 15% increased damage".

imho "allies" includes minions and party members. and i can imagine my minion having this property leads to me, as ally, being affected by it.

This isnt median.

A lot of builds in poe are ranged or totemers or employ high evasion + ondars, or max / block, etc, when you compare that with the % chance and damage threshold, it doesnt become so common. We will see, anyways.
