Prizes for new Default/Hardcore leagues

This is intentional I feel, the reason they implemented rewards (where they previously didnt exist) was to encourage participation in the races.

Let me ask you a question: would you participate in the races if they offered less rewards than playing normally (aside from coming 1st)? Well some people wouldnt, and they wanted a reason to play. You can tone down the rewards, but make them too crappy and less people will show up.

Personally I like the current rewards, but I wouldnt be too sad if they lowered them. I like to think it encourages 'casual' gaming, like the IP reward you get for your first game each day in LoL. Obviously with a smaller amount of events its hard for everybody to participate, but they are increasing the # of events soon and everybody can participate in the long races too.

I couldn't give a rat's arse about the weekend races.
People are getting all flamey about currency races. As a hoarder, maybe I should throw my hat in and participate, but I'd rather play at my own pace without the competitive stress. At my work, I deal with enough type A competitive personalities as it is. No need to bring these home to the virtual as well.

I'm wa-waing at the fact that Chris turned the default and hard-core ladders into a race until open beta. Top 20? come on, why not top 200?

I agree with this to a point. I hope that many rewards will be given out in future races all the way to 200. But what could GGG have offered to the 200th individual?

Since everything will be wiped, and they surely, from a business perspective, can't hand out tons of free GGGold. What can be done?

Now in post-OB races I agree with your statement. More the merrier right? But until that point comes, it's really either the GGGold or DemiGods.

Also, nobody competes for the sake of competition (well unless you are 12). People compete to win the sweet loot

100% wrong sir.
100%? Interesting that you can speak for every single person ever to compete in a race.

Its a double negative, he said 'nobody', and 100% wrong is the same as wrong.
Only has to speak for one person over the age of 12 to be 100% correct.

The statement boomjoose referred to was exactly then wrong if at least one person does compete for the sake of competition.
Technically he is refering to my second sentence. "People are competing for the sweet loot". I don't see an absolute there.

But ok, you guys are apparently great nitpickers. I would rather continue the discussion at hand. For me the problem still is the low drop rates of rare orbs rather than rewarding a race with prizes.

There are many different incentive to these race and I hope that the races is able to cater to many of these different desire, whether prize, fame, self-improvement, competitive means, or simply a different environment. I may not agree with one person that they must play in the race for competitive mean, or to be well known, but I do respect and acknowledge their reason and I believe the race is enough to cater all of our desire. And if not, well, they cannot please everyone.

In terms of discussing about the prize, my own concern is that that more common rare orbs as prizes can alter the game economy more than it needs or that the economy becomes more reliant on races or other competitions which, in my humble opinion, is not very desirable as it makes it far easier to power-game upwards as oppose to someone that only decides to participate once in a while (especially due to real life limitations).

Last note: Perhaps this topic should be opened in a more appropriate sub-forums so we can discuss this (hopefully) in a more beta-testing perspective.

Thank you.
Research can't start without a thought process. Listing and organizing is important, but to make it worthwhile to oneself requires thought.

Agree 100%

There is a pretty good debate going on here, and Chris has acknowledged that he is intending on revamping the rewards and drop rates based on what has been said here.

I second the nomination to move the parts of this thread that involve reward discussion to the beta discussion.
Game needs monkey pets.
