Death Penalty Changes in 0.11.3

GGG please don't kowtow to the millennial whiners who want a kid-glove world where the only consequence of failure is for someone to pat their back and tell them they are special.

This permissive strategy of conditional standards and their pseudo-enforcement is exactly what the whiners need to learn to live without; not have it reinforced and adjusted every time they skin their knee.

Stand up for your ideals GGG, don't let the babies' cries wear you down like they do everyone else.

IMO, when we talk about oldschool, it's more of a complex and deep system, not frustrating or punishing game. It's a game where it takes time to learn the system, and there's a lot of freedom in how you can play around the game system. I mean if you look at Wasteland 2 or Project Torment, they pitch themself as oldschool RPG, not by making a punishing game with harsh death penalty, but rather by having a complex game system.

The hard part in progress comes beyond Merciless. It's when Merciless exp is too low, that's when you spend hours doing maps just to gain some exp. That's when people venture into difficult maps (hence we always hear people asking if a build is map-viable). That's where people hit a wall.



5 and 10% seem better for me also.
I don't like this at all.
If you should do something about the exp penalty you should increase it with 2,5 and 5%, so that its 10% on cruel and 20 on merc.

I agree with the majority.

Please keep death penalties as they are. A lot of frustration is linked to dying and that shouldnt change. It should always be valued to stay alive.

Chris: i wholeheartely suggest: cruel: 5%, merciless: 12%... Dont take the joy away from the people, myself included, who have bled and swet getting through level 80+...

Your death penalty is one of the things I really cherish about this game.

When you changed the monster levels of act3 merciless, you made a thread about it to see the feedback. You should listen to the feedback here.

Oh and by the way: cruel death penalty has never been very noticeable, why make the same change to merciless?

I've been inactive for quite some time but thinking of coming back now.

One thing I don't understand in this thread is all the hate for this change, especially when it comes in the form of, "Standard is already too easy, not that I play that peasant garbage league."

Okay, well, then the change doesn't affect you? Yes, some people enjoy this game casually, heck, a lot of them look up to and enjoy watching the more dedicated/higher skilled players in hardcore.

But not everyone wants to play this game, or any game, with the sort of attention to detail, extreme carefulness, and with the insane session length that lots of top players play at. I'm certainly not in favor of hurting the game that those players love, but I'm not really sure why so many of them are in favor of hurting the game that the less hardcore players enjoy?

This represents an improvement for the large, and significantly less vocal part of the player base while having no ill-effects on the smaller, more dedicated and much more represented on these forums cross-section of players.

I also believe the best way to go is a decreasing penalty for death based on level. I personaly don't have the patience to level characters higher than mid-70s right now, but when I lose 15%, I'm pretty OK with it (that's about 15 min of Catacombs farming).
However, this must be days of map farm for a lvl 90+ char, so it makes sense to lose a lower percentage.

In reality, these "percentages" would be a determined amount of XP lost.

I like this idea. Perhaps when players hit say level 70-75, the exp death penalty of 15% should scale down by 0.5% p/level and capped when it's down to 8-10% by level 80-85 throught to level 100.
