However, if the data shows a steady flow of players who hit a high level wall in softcore, die thus lose XP and eventually ragequitting the game completely then I can see reason in wishing to make some attempt at retaining them. Those of us who want a real challenge always have hardcore.

I believe that is the core of the problem. At high levels, harsh exp loss is preventing people from progressing. What good is a game if you cannot progress.

Now I'm sure some people will say learn 2 play. But you cannot expect every players to have the same skills as the hardcore players do. In every game, the community will be of a wide range of skills and the critics seem to think that the game should only serve the elite hardcore players who are skillful enough to stay alive at all times.
I also want to say that is there are rly ppl (i believe that 90% of them are just trolling, sad thing is that devs can count this as a real feedback) that rly likes losing days of progress in seconds, very often without even their fault or time for reaction they will have ability to create their own league later.

Go, pay and create league with -100% death penatly on normal - im sure you league will be extremely popular and let normalm players play game not behind the wall of 5 chars in party (because that is way 'hardcores' usually plays which is rly pathetic and laughable).

Thx.

The worst penalty for me when my character dies, is what I feel inside, eny other penalty is not important.

But for those with no self control or self confidence, who have to be punished by game because can not punish theirselves, maybe 5/7,5/10 would be satisfying?

It's not meant to be HC, but it's not meant to be D3 either. And nerfing things like this is a slippery slope.

And as entropus said, the devs have always wanted to make an "hardcore" arpg.

I don't see how it could be comparable to D3 because the distinction between PoE and D3 wasn't about death penalty. It has more to do with the game system which is equal across all league.

Death penalty is about two different approach to that same game system. Irrespective of what games we're talking about, there will be two crowd of players, one where they strive for perfection and that's what the Hardcore leagues in these games are for.

The other crowd is a more casual approach in the sense that they want to experience the deep and complex game mechanic, but it doesn't have to be punishing. Death penalty doesn't add anything to the depth of a game. (It's just like a game maker make a hard mode by simply making the AI enemies godlike. That merely makes the game punishing. Not everyone plays a video game to be punished.)

Path of Exile wasn't distinguished from the rest because of how punishing death is. It's different because of how deep the game system is.

I have a lot of respect for hardcore players. But I'm sure everyone will agree that not all players have the skills hardcore players have. Harsh exp penalty only serve to limit the progress of players who are not good enough to stay alive the same way hardcore players do. Standard league is to allow them to progress without HC skills.

Don't punish these players by limiting their ability to progress.

PoE was meant to be hardcore, oldshool, difficult even for SC players? Halving death penalty on Merciless would make the game half as difficult to progress.

Half.

Sounds legit, the exp penalty in D2 was trivial at best.

I didnt read all of the comments but death penalty could be stacked. It can start with %3 and 8 but if you die again within in 1 hour or same place (or something) it goes %5 12.5 then eventually old ratio %7.5 15(max stack)

What you people think? :D
Ohhh, 99% experience gained. Level Up is soooo close. Happy, happy. Hellhound attack and burning my skin. Life regen and gain is fine. Keep slashing them. Sec after ... Oh no, desync, long range Exiles attack from out off screen. Death in one or two shot. Frustrating. Why I play this game, when I loose so much time and XP? Should I get outside with my friends and forget this game? Maybeeee. Sorry for my Eng. :D XD
Great change, leveling up from 88 has begun to become increasingly difficult. I would however like to see the xp penalty as decreased with level.. maybe start with 20% and go down 1% pr 10 levels.

Why change the Cruel penalty? 7.5% is barely noticeable as it is. 3% will feel like nothing. You may as well get rid of it altogether.

Just my opinion.
