I used to use Arc > Chain > Culling strike a long time ago to feel like I was doing something. Dropped it after awhile cause it didn't matter and wasn't needed (Cursing enemies will direct your minions attacks just as well as Arc).

Thanks for all the great information here in these nearly 60 pages of posts. I'm brand new to the game and I just wanted to know if this build is possible (although at reduced effectiveness) or just not viable at all if I were to start on the Templar side? (Since there are no male witches)

Mind you this is quite literally my 2nd day having downloaded the game and I'm sure I'll jack something up along the way anyhow, but any info would be appreciated. If not, I'll just pick witch and proceed as best as I can.

It is, but its inefficient. Too many Aura nodes are on the far right compared to whats on the far left. The only redeeming things on the left side is the +2 max all res node, and its not worth everything your losing on the right.

As much as I'd like to make a Scion, its simply too many wasted points on travel nodes than if I had chosen a witch.
That happened to me too I tried making a scion summoner(turned it into a spectral thrower), the location just wasn't point efficient. Same goes for templar its starting region makes you lose quite a bit of passive points.

As for arc. Are you trying to have arc deal damage or shock? In my experience minions out damage skills by a large margin especially if you invested heavily into minion nodes.

arc + elepro + fast cast should shock things pretty well.

The other solution is to raise a blackguard arc mage from barracks and have that shock for you.

side note:

I tried dropping determination to make manashield more efficient. So I have about 700 mana left over. 30% damage reduction is way superior to the 12% or so physical reduction I gained from using determination. That extra 30% mitigation is really useful for tanking burst (I use clarity + artic armor into the mix to tank smaller hits).

If the content is easy I just turn on hatred and have my zombies squash everything.

I have a temlar with this build. It really is inefficient, sure I can get the Faith and Steel cluster, plus 1% health regen. But overal I'm losing quite a bit of health nodes, unable to get Mana Shield without further sacrifices (will either use the mana shield unique or drop even more helath/mana nodes), and it's harder to get the double curse cluster.

But...beards are awesome, so I'm sticking to it.


P.S. I of course had an idea to drop before-mentioned clusters, but even so there will be some inefficiencies, plus it will take to many regrets, so maybe later if ever.


P.S.S. So, Matt, you've basically dropped 2 auras for mana shield? Vitality and determination? I do agree that determination doesn't provide much (when compared to mana shield) to the character and who knows how much armor minions have, so a % increase might be miniscule on them too, but vitality seems op with aura nodes.

Doubt it. Matt probably uses it for the 30 health that it gives, one of the very few weapons with a health mod. I personally prefer mana + mana regen + resist weapon.

I hadn't considered dropping determination, but then I don't follow the reduction listed on char screen since its only vaguely accurate. after a bit of calculation MoM does reduce damage more than determination by about 10% or so (at lvl 20 w/ +70% aura buffs), neat.

I've build myself in a somewhat opposite direction and could probably use a bit of advise.

Mandatory parts of build:
max summon amount
max aura passives (includes prism guard, possibly alpha howl)
max ES, low life build possibly. I'm loathe to give up that 4th spectre.

I'm 83 currently so mostly missing defensive nodes. ~2700 es but only 300 life after resservations if using all the auras (have to turn off determination on chaos type maps).

The idea is 75% chaos resist + flasks to stop chaos damage, regen -> ES is a requirement otherwise I can't do maps with chaos degen mod and i'd guesstimate when I've upgraded my armor/gloves to full ES equips I should have 4-5k ES? I'm wondering if 140% ES passives will actually provide enough defensive ability or not.

I've been wondering if I should just give up on ES and respec to a life+EB build, but having 5 auras + clarity is amazing for the minions.

gear im currently running with, I have to swap a ring to fire resist to cap it. I know there are some gaping holes (this gear is 8 months old)

because my life/mana pools are so small after the aura update, im considering getting "smaller" flasks so that they don't cap and stop regenning after half a second.

Regarding leveling with this build I found Fire trap and Fireball (mostly trap) combo to work great and used this until I raced into Merciless Lunaris at lvl 60.

The reason Fire Trap synergizes so good with this build imo is that you lvl up your Burning Damage and Increase AOE gems. Flammability and Vulnerability, which you choose, are also your curses of choice. Also your crap minions stop the mobs in thier tracks and you can just pile up the fire traps.

Clarity is the only aura I used while leveling and really the only one you need until you get your minion army.

The downside, in order to deal effective damage with fire trap, is that you need to make a minor investment (8-9 points) into elemental/spell damage which needs to be refunded later. I chose to go left through the fire nodes from the witch starting area up until the Fire Walker passive. This along with a roughly 70% extra spell/elemental damage from gear carried me easily into Act 3 Merciless.

Hope this helps anyone trying leveling this build this way as imho it is a really cheap effecient way to lvl a witch summoner.
