are there really hundreds of thousands of players who will be ok with a single death bricking a map?

I hope GGG don't budge on this one. People need to understand poe2 is a different game. If you want to play cast on death builds you can always stay in poe1.
GGG doesn't need to change the map portals.
I guarantee you if they they don't reduce the size of maps and length of the campaign....game will be dead in no time.

Right now the game isn't made for live service and 3 months cycles.

Spot on!

We're in the honeymoon period now, people are more than OK playing through the acts and endgame as the game is new, fresh and exciting. Once the second or third league hits, a lot of players will start to feel the good, old burnout because of zone and map sizes, as well as a lot of map layouts. The worst thing here, is that it's totally unnecessary and seems implemented just to be an inconvenience.

While I'm not a huge fan of the one-portal system, it's a trifle compared to the layout issue.
Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.
