How does GGG plan to make money?

I was here for PoE 1's beta, even before EA back then.

They have always had the game free to play for everyone and they made it work....without letting people pay for power!

The game has kept me entertained/interested for over a decade. I spent money on it because they deserve to be supported and literally that is how/why they made money most of the time. Most people don't care about cosmetics. I never bought cosmetics just more and more stash tabs I didn't really need lol.

My friends bought cosmetics but I just don't see them/care about them really. I always have focused more on gameplay than graphics.

The point though is that they not only made this game free for everyone, they managed to make a good profit over the years, just because people appreciate the game. They didn't HAVE to pay anything to play it, they chose to do so.

I have spent $30 on PoE 2 so far, not sure how much more I will spend in the future, but I have enjoyed this game more than pretty much all the games I have paid 70$ for in the past, even including at this point Elden ring. It's not even finished yet!!!

So I do not think they will have problems going forward. I don't think PoE 1 will totally die, at least not till PoE 2 fully releases. I do think the numbers will drop drastically and that they are going to have to do some seriously crazy new seasons to pull people back lol. It'll help once PoE 2 is finished and we have played all it's content because at least for now PoE 1 has ALOT more builds than PoE 2. If they continue to spend time and make good new leagues on PoE 1, after I have gotten the fresh/newness of PoE 2 out of my system, I will go back and play PoE 1 again, I still loved it.

That being said, I wouldn't focus much on it for awhile tbh, it's gonna take time for me to truly play everything I want in PoE 2, especially if things constantly get added over the next 6 months to a year.

One way or another GGG has done very right by me and I think all gamers and I truly appreciate them. So do many other people which is why they have made so much money (without requiring anyone to actually pay them). I wish more companies were like this.
I know who they're not going to make any more money from... $30 for early access is all i'll ever invest in this game, no matter how long i might or might not stick around. They should be paying me for wasting my time with this unbalanced beta test.

I never played POE 1 but I dropped $60 for POE 2 EA because I see how much they care about the game.

I just want to be able to support them in meaningful ways and I was hoping it wasn’t just colorful things that make the game look like COD.

But hey I’m sure I’ll find something on the transaction shop that will call my name.

I’ve already been eyeing some of those stash tabs to help organize my mess I got going on.

Sorry about how you feel.

I have got more than my moneys worth at over 40 hrs played so far and a lot more to come.
Lots of us happily give GGG money for MTX.
Lots of us are addicts.
PoE 1 is the best. PoE 2 is something.

I think the sale is still going? IF it is, I would highly recommend at least picking up the currency stash tab and some basic extra stash tabs with at least 1 upgraded to premium. They are very useful. If you have 600 though I would also for sure get the gem stash tab and maybe the unique one. Totally worth it in my opinion. It will def make your life easier to have some, and the sale will let you get more for the same amount!:)
Cosmetics earn a lot.

For perspective, one cosmetic mount released in WoW earned more than all the sales of Starcraft 2.

poe1 will probably be shut down in the near future to cut down on costs. they already pretty much abandoned it

Yep they are going to shut down a game that has been bring them in $80 million a year, makes perfect sense.

that was before poe 2. if poe2 is successful they wont need poe1 anymore. why keep it alive if they dont have the staff to run it properly? they have like 10 people working on poe1 leagues. this year we only got 2 leagues

This is where the cross MTX unlock comes in handy for them
Yes it's a nice thing to do for their customers, but I have a feeling it will even end up being a very smart move for them

They will do leagues that doesn't overlap
Many PoE 2 players will likely try out PoE 1 leagues as well, they just don't know it yet :P
Why?
THey will be able to earn challenge rewards (that they can't get in PoE2)
But those skins will carry over to PoE 2

And now GGG have a reason to do twice as many supporter packs
Many PoE 2 players will also buy these even if they don't play PoE1
My guess is that core supporter packs will be the same across PoE and PoE 2
But they will both have seperate league supporter packs

I do hope this is their plan actually

Because it will mean they have incentive to keep PoE 1 up to date
Good quality leagues and even improve the graphics etc for PoE 1

Nobody's really mentioned it yet so I do want to point out what I feel has been overlooked.

The vast majority of PoE's cashflow is absolutely going to be from cosmetics, however stash tabs are pretty much required if you want to invest a good amount of time after reaching the endgame.

They're not much, even less if you catch a sale, but stash tabs are basically a delayed purchase price for PoE if you decide to stick around after the campaign.

~$30 or so is all you'd need, the ones from PoE1 carry over into PoE2 as well so there's no double-dipping. For clarity, PoE2 will eventually be F2P after EA so this $30 entry fee is very much a one-off thing.

TL:DR
Most invested players that reach the endgame will spend about $30 on stash tabs. The rest of GGG's income comes from the cosmetics and supporter packs which don't sell a /lot/, but are sold at a high price tag so it balances out.
I will buy some of the stash tabs today but I’m curious as to the necessity?

Right now they give you roughly 4 different tabs to store all your loot. Seems like a good amount of space.

But the currency tabs look might fine. I’m assuming they just greatly improve QOL?
