Gemling Legionnaires - Lazy's Ailment Gunslinger

TALA MOANA EXILES!
Welcome to my theorycrafting guide for the Gemling Legionnaires Ailment Gunslinger League Starter that I'll be playing in Early Access.

About me:
I have been playing PoE 1 for 10 years now on and off so I have some experience playing PoE, and to me, this game is all about fixing problems that come up with your builds and letting imagination run wild. So if you're here, this post will be a diary to keep track of my first build in PoE 2, and I'll keep it updated as I progress.

BIG DISCLAIMER:
We are in early access, things are subject to change. All information is based on my early impression of the game, reading, and watching through countless mechanics and videos. But I can't guarantee that everything will work as intended.

BUILD SUMMARY
Spoiler

Why Gemling Legionnaires?
> Quality to Gem is good damage upgrade with no downside (Gem levels actually add mana cost so there's a downside)
> Attributes are a huge problem and Adaptive Capabilities Fixed that! (focus on strength, with just enough dex to hold the Crossbow)
This build is a good league starter because you are not relying on any unique items to be strong. We're scaling physical damage for poison and bleed, so all you need is a good phys bow. Everything is very well put together.
Our campaign is very safe. This build has a lot of CC in the form of freeze and chill (the best one). We have good single-target damage as well as good and satisfying AoE clear (I can shatter the ice wall for hours).

+ Ailment Damage is Good in PoE 2
+ Source of Chill & Freeze is a GOOD defensive layer.
+ Design to scale Physical damage and not rely on uniques since we don't have enough information, SSF in mind
+ Armor/Evasion as a defensive shell is good at least in the campaign
+ Poison/Bleed immune when attacking (those are the most annoying debuff)

- Kinda slow, 2 buttons, need to shoot/swap/shoot (keybinds M4/M5 button fixed this and it doesn't feel clunky though)
- Glacial Bolt is awkward on some bosses with smaller model
- Glacial Bolt need aiming to be useful (not sure if it works on controller)

We are specifically building up ailments and leveraging the Payoff Skill Gems in order to consume those ailments to do extra damage.
Permafrost Bolts (and swap to Glacier Bolt ASAP) to Build Up Freeze > Fragmentation Rounds consumes the Freeze to build up Poison + Armour Break + Freeze > High Velocity Rounds to consume the Armour Break and Bleed for EXTRA BIG Bleed damage.

VIDEOS

ASCENDANCY
Spoiler

If Ascendancy Pathing:
1 - 7 - 4 - 5
I opted to take 7 because attributes are a problem in PoE 2, maybe later on when it's fix we can drop it
Dec 10th / Apparently 4 is bugged, and can brick your character, so for now, go with 7 - 8 - 1 - 2

LEVELING SKILLS TREE
Spoiler
Skill trees are subject to change, and some nodes might be outdated because we are in early access. Please let me know if you spotted any errors. Still need to see how the weapon skill set going to be as we only get 102 passive skill points
9/12 Updated All Trees (dropping the 2-handed damage nodes)

Level 1 - 20
Level 20 - 40
Level 40 - 60
Level 60 - 80+
Early Map Strength Stack

GEM SETUP
Spoiler

My normal campaign setup, before getting Glacier Bolt, you can use Permafrost Bolt as a substitute with the same link
Don't use Pierce with Glacial Bolt, I updated the correct link
Added Act 3-6 gem setups, Attrition is very good, and cast on crit setup can be achieved with the Adaptive Capability Ascendancy Point (just stack strength)

GENERIC LEVELING TIPS
Spoiler
+ We are attack-based builds, and in PoE, this means better weapon upgrades is KEY to dealing good damage. In terms of GEARING, here are your priorities:
> WEAPON with more base damage + more mods
> You get more mods by using crafting currency in this order:
White Items -> Transmutation -> Regal -> Exalt Orb x3
> Get better base by Shopping/Gamble & Check shop every time you level ups if you feels like you're lacking damage
+ ARMOR/EVASION-based are good; try to get GOOD LIFE on your items.
+ Good movement speed means better defense because we can move while shooting, so try to get MOVEMENT SPEED on boots.
+ In PoE 2, generally it's better to be overleveled, as there are many bosses, so don't rush through the campaign; try to clear more mobs and stay on the same level or +1/2 level above the zone. You're not racing for the endgame.

ITEMS
Spoiler

Always keep Crossbow updated or you will lack DAMAGE! For reference
My Crossbow toward end of Act 3

Spoiler

My Crossbow early Act 4 and until the end of Campaign

Spoiler

Unique rings for the early map setup
Spoiler

We are using galvanic shard + this ring to convert damage to cold and freeze, much less clunky than glacier bolt

RESERVED FOR UPDATES
Just switched to this build and gonna try it out. Was using the grenade build from Mobalytics, but saw this build and loved the photo of the chic with the gun so much I'm swapping.
How are you finding the build so far?
A lot slower than the Mobalytics frostfire grenade build.
Use this build, i think we dont neeed high velocity. Ill use only stun grenade and permafrost/frag bolts. that's more than enough
Out of curiosity, why do you take the nodes that give you more skill gems and let you use support gems twice and then not utilize either effect? It seems like it could be more useful to go 7-8 instead of 4-5
Cheers, hope things go well, i will keep dancing with my pom poms for u.
Just curious, the build doesn't go for any reload speed with crossbows? Relying so much on frag and permafrost with the reloads is a bit slow, no?

Clear normal campaign with it, I think it can be improve much more, I just need to get more gem sockets. The playstyle itself is a 2 button weapon swapping which is really fun. I bind glacial bolt and fragmentation to mouse 4 and 5 button so it's super comfy to swap and shoot while my left hand just focus on the WASD and occasionnaly swap to High Velocity Rounds.

I haven't try the frostfire grenade, but it seems alright. Fire ailment is a little bit harder to procs so you might run into issue there. My build generate a lot of CC with freeze and Ice wall, so it's quite safe and comfy to play.

Mainly for single-target damage and high HP rare. Otherwise, you're correct. I don't really use High Velocity Round that often and will probably look to swap into Plasma Bolt.

No, you're right; I don't have it in the plan yet because it will need to be tested out. I'm seeing, however, a lot of good potential with it that synergizes much better. But again, I will come back and update you guys on that as I need to get more socket and tier 3 support.

You're on point for this, as I get to actually play, this is a huge QoL, and I have updated the skill trees, taking the reload speed nodes.
