Quite a few people tout units sold as a measure of success, and for the company, that is absolutely the chief measurement. I tend to think of success differently as a player, but that is one way to measure I suppose.

D4 is what it needs to be for that target audience. I hope it remains appealing to that group for a long time so that they maybe quit trying to turn POE into D3/D4. That's the win/win.

I mean that's not really fair in context. GGG will determine PoE's future not a comparatively small voice here or on Reddit. I can't turn PoE into D4, not that I even want that. That's not a reasonable argument, I don't think.

As far a measuring success, I suppose that can be somewhat arbitrary from a player perspective, as long as there isn't projection bias. Player counts, revenue, sales, hours played/retention, all those metrics matter, maybe not as much to the player directly, but it can impact a games development future, which presumably a player would care about.

So it's fine to say "I don't like D4", but its quite another to say it's not successful because it's not your personal cup of tea. It's OK to be a bit objective here, nothing bad will happen.

I didn't say GGG would listen to them. If they listened to the loudest crowd and voice, we would eventually just have another Diablo. One Diablo 3/4 is enough.

I simply said that if the Diablo crowd likes it so much, maybe they'll stop trying to turn POE into another Diablo. That's the win I'm referring to.

No, I'm not worried about GGG listening to them/you. They've demonstrated a stubbornness that at times may seem like a hindrance, but in this particular case, I'm quite grateful for.

Thats fair.

I do think there is some nuance though, where feedback and criticism from a more casual gamer doesn't immediately mean the game becomes Diablo. I really do think GGG should make the game more accessible, without a full on philosophy shift.

Sort of in this vein too, having PoE Mobile and PoE2 headlining at the same Exilecon should be an interesting dynamic given the players likely to be in attendance.

yeah but is it? mean i wager ggg made more money than blizzard on D4 so doesn't make it ggg still more successful?
tbh i think ur successful if u can get up an online game up for 10+ years x'D a good launch well "good" isn't enough for me to call someone successfull.

i'm pretty sure that a big or at least a part of the D4 players will look up games likeD4 and check out poe and try it. mean how long can u really enjoy D4? like a couple months at best? maybe come back for the seasons if they screw it up? mean i dunno man.

Woah WOAH WOAH there bucko. That's some high grade HERESY. How dare you say POE should be more accessible, possibly elevating it's retention numbers, but making the game more accessible to peasants in the process? That's UNACCEPTABLE.

Lol no.

Blizzard made more revenue in 5 days with D4 than GGG has made in 10 years with PoE.

Kind of doubt it. but either way it doesn't make D4 a better game or succssfull or whatever

None of us know how much money POE has made, but I don't think it's even close between the Diablo franchise and POE in terms of revenue. Activision/Blizzard caters to a more casual audience specifically to maximize revenue. They're not idiots when it comes to money.

I suspect some people went to D4 expecting something more in depth than D3 and are probably not happy with their purchase. Conversely, there are some people who play Diablo to completion quickly and are satisfied, and then come to POE to test the waters only to find it is nowhere near as shallow -- which will be a negative for them. And some might like it and stay.

More often than not though, I think people who thoroughly enjoy one will find the other too complicated or too shallow; generally speaking of course. The real issue is when one starts to die off and the staunch players of that game go to the other and try to shift that game to their old game.

Right now and the next few years should be good for both groups in my opinion. POE doesn't have the Diablo crowd non-stop complaining about some of the core tenets of POE, and the Diablo crowd has a new shiny Diablo game to enjoy. So I say: long live Diablo. You are the bug zapper of POE. :)

i mean of course not hence i said i wager cause i doubt D4 not the franchise made more money than ggg. and i believe that's true yes. obviously they love money.

mean i personally was expecting more at this state i like D3 more than i like D4 overall sure it has it's pros but the cons though. yes i think D4 players will get done with it and look up other arpgs and see poe and try it. sure i know from experience how people struggle with it at first specially in 2023.

mean D4 is new people like it and well it's alright for a cuople weeks tbh. but the real question is how will they do for the seasons like they could potentially chance the outcome of the game. they can patch some stupid shit and make it better yet they can keep it as is as well. they could try to better it and make it worse. nobody really knows.

bug zapper of poe? i don't really get that line lmao xd

Ugh.

NZ has public reporting business requirements, and anyone can see what GGG claims in revenue annually. This has been true for years. Its literally posted online. GGG has done well for itself, no doubt, and CW made multiple millions with the Tencent buyout, but seriously, its nowhere even remotely close to D4.

Even if you took GGG's highest reported revenue year and multiplied that by every year since 2013, it still would be below the 660+ million D4 has made since launch.

I understand that raw dollars don't always translate to player experience, but this notion PoE is bigger or more sucessful in those terms...well that's fantasy land.
