Did GGG Purposely mispell Samnite?

There's no such thing as a Samite. The Samnite's were an Italian tribe that were the last to concede to Rome, and the helmet looks rather similar to the ones they wore.

Unsure if Samite is spelled purposely or if unknowingly misspelled.

did you ever think that samite means something?

Samite was a luxurious and heavy silk fabric worn in the Middle Ages, of a twill-type weave, often including gold or silver thread.

You don't say?!?!

Does that helmet look like it's made of silk?

hard to tell but i can see the goldish color
Maybe it's short for Samsonite?

But seriously, I think the OP is onto something. Surprisingly, they didn't make what I consider the most obvious connection:

A Samnite (Latin Samnis, plural Samnites) was a Roman gladiator who fought with equipment styled on that of a warrior from Samnium: a short sword (gladius), a rectangular shield (scutum), a greave (ocrea), and a helmet

And the helmet art is clearly that of a gladiator's.

Nice catch.

Gamebreaking typo confirmed!

I think I was unconsciously reading that as "Samnite" every time I saw it, since I was familiar with the term from Rome: Total War.
We're all in this leaky boat together, people.

Obvious troll is obvious, but nice try.

Wish Chris Wilson had a twitter so I could @ him and get a real answer.

Oh well.
You have your real answer -- it's almost certainly a typo, given Samnite is a type of gladiator and that helmet is without doubt that of a gladiator's.

Interesting that it's a typo that still has almost related meaning though, which could be why it's flown under the radar for so long.

On the other hand, MAYBE they originally intended it to be samite but given it's a heavy-type helmet, I doubt it.

Miscommunications within the office aren't exactly rare. Whoever named the item quite possibly didn't design it.

Also, compared to the staunching/stanching confusion, this one's pretty harmless.

Still, RHYS or MARK1, if you're watching, this is one for you.

how is that trolling? they also have samite gloves in the game. is that a typo as well? according to your logic it must be
...Yeah, it wasn't trolling. Reaching, probably, but definitely not trolling.
