Looks like a lot of players don't want to play tower defence.

I can't play at all right now (damn Hardwarelayer/IBMCloud bullshit overloaded backbone is lagging/freezing me out to Dallas or WDC from Miami NAP) so I looked at PoE steam charts:

Just under 75K for league start is significantly lower than Legion, Synthesis. or Betrayal (which had a horrible launch with way too many crash bugs). Looks like many players don't want to play tower defense that slows down the race to 90+ or the fact that loot for time played in lower than previous leagues (no surprise on that fact). Looks like another challenge league where GGG is biting the hands that feed them. I guess they'll never learn that most players are casual and thus don't like playing a starvation arpg... err shooter... err whatever PoE is now. Also the player bounce to over 100K players at league start from BlizzCon major foobar last fall is over (what no announcement of D4 in the pipeline?... you just lost me forever Blizzard). Should be very interesting if D4 is announced this year what the next league player totals will be. Yes, a D4 announcement will mean a a couple of years wait so nothing immediate but at least more D3 players won't be pissed off again and bail. Also, of course I know this is only steam numbers and don't count the stand-alone client PoE players like me (but it's all we can get).

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration.

I like the league despite the absolutely awful pathing algorithms.

But I'm not surprised that most people aren't interested.
I would if I could. The horrendous performance issues Patch 3.8 however.....
you made one mistake though....

looking at steam charts.

oh well, they're posted at least 4 times per league, literally regardless of how successful or not the league is. i like it, im having my fun. don't really care about anyone else
I enjoy the league despite the usual buggy launch and performance bs. Blight is a great concept and the masters daily rework is fantastic.
It will convert your forum titles into decorative square badges that use the space next to your forum posts more economically so that you can show off an unlimited number of them at any one time. - GGG, 2018 (https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3573673)
People are taking a break. There's a lot of great reasons to. And the game is getting old. Even with new mechanics, this league didn't really promise anything more than another simple diversion. They succeeded there.

Nothing they've done with this league would lose long time players permanently. It's just time for a break.

watchu mean? when GGG releases how many players there were on day 1 of a league, Steam makes up a significant number of what they announce. Just have to subtract their number from Steam's day 1 number, and boy it's usually above 60% of PoE players using Steam. Add 40% to whatever Steam numbers are and you're probably pretty close to the real one, and it's this way quite literally every single league so no reason to argue Steam charts isn't a general indication of what direction the PoE population is going.

Can't argue, Blight is a bit of a downturn, but I don't think anybody even GGG expected another Legion with it. Plus with the usual upcoming games...

the league would be a lot more fun if it was actually a tower defense. I doubt whoever came up with this mess ever played a good Tower Defense game like Gemcraft. This is more like a bowling simulator. 5 independent lanes in a spoke pattern with the creeps coming in one giant wave. I hardly bother with towers in most setups since at best you can get one per lane.

Blight mechanic is fine. Not sure why so much hate on it, aside from people wanting red maps and exalts at every encounter.

At least I can see wtf is going on... stuff pops out of portals, I can track it on my map, plan accordingly, and respond.

Way better than jumping around all over the place hoping you hit as much stuff as possible, as in Legion. No thanks.

Turned the game off a few times so far in Blight because of performance. It's laughable. I'll give you that.

As for population? Change of season... summer's done... people adjusting to new things in RL.... some people going back to school and/or playing WoW classic. Not sure if that really counts, but certainly worth considering.

I'm mostly playing standard and am enjoying the new Masters missions!
