This is not a pay to play scheme. This is innovation at it's finest. The community has been asking for this and you deliver.
Thanks for not announcing Path of Exile Mobile :)

I think that this is a good idea.
This will probably not impact us in the main softcore leagues in any way, they don't want most players to experience that hell. The most dedicated players deserve a little extra attention and this is a small project that has not affected the quality of 3.5 which is the main announcement of the season.

How would it be pay to win? You'd only be competing with other people in the same league as you. They could void the characters and items at the end if the league had too many fun modifiers. Please think before you comment. Also, there's really no reason to put your signature at the end of a forum post. Your name is listed on the right side.

You are right in that thinking before you comment is important, you aren't doing it though.
Picture this on new league start.
You can play the new free league or you can play one of the many private leagues with lots of extra "fun modifiers" giving you more loot and more drops.
That's basically the definition of pay to win. It doesn't matter if it's voided, if you can pay for a more rewarding experience, it's pay to win.
People not playing in these leagues with extra "fun modifiers" would feel like they are losing out, that's pay to win.
As it stands right now your options would be :
- Play the new league for free
- Pay to play a harder version of the new league with no extra rewards
Try reading this post which Chris commented on as being a good summary, maybe that will help you :

Are they really making a league where you have to spend real money to participate in???? If so, this is where I'm out... Not to mention having to pay every 10 days...
Did you really read it all? And if so, did you pay any attention? They arent making any new league, they are giving you the opportunity to make the game harder and more customizable with no increase in loot or xp, so no real gain. You dont have to be in if you dont want... its optional and there is no new or exclusive content to these leagues.
please read it again
Thank you very much, there are to much like those "Bigb3204",.... crybabies.
lol. you go ahead and hide behind your keyboard. My apologies for misreading the info. Thanks for taking time out of your day to correct me. hope you feel better.

Paying to play a voided custom league with one or two extra league mods like Beyond is less pay to win than Stash Tabs for instance. The definition of pay to win is to pay for an advantage over other players who don't pay. Since you are not really competing anyone outside your league, it is not pay to win. I'm also not really asking for insane stuff like 100% more quantity or anything like that. I picked Beyond as an example because it's a mechanic that is quite rippy, drops very little extra loot, but is a lot of fun.
You could argue that the game is more fun for players who pay for nice looking cosmetic MTX. That doesn't make the game pay2win.
I've read that reddit post, and I don't agree with it because it's only addressing an extreme scenario where the custom leagues would be super rewarding. That's not at all what I'm asking for.

One can also argue that there's no direct competition within a temp league either - unless you're going for a first to 100. Nothing else is a competition outside of self-goals. If you can pay to have multiple league mods then you're paying to boost exp/drops.

I'd split No Vending into two: No Buying and No Selling.
As for the announcement as a whole - really interested by it. Can't wait until there will be populat private leagues that can be extended indefinitely.
I don't think this will happen, due to the current content release cycles and the fact that you can't change modifiers after a league is created.
This change won't interfere with already-created leagues as after said change the leagues with the No Vending option would just have both No Buying and No Selling turned on instead.

So I can make my own league based on new league for all players, but it can last forever if I decide to pay enough?
I dislike this idea, p2w vibes will never hide from me.

This pricing scheme is just beyond obscene. No thanks.
^This was my initial reaction. After having had some time to think about it, I'd like to provide some more constructive feedback.
My main concerns are:
Pricing Scheme:
After having spent literally thousands of dollars on this game I don't want to ever pay a "subscription fee" or use points on any kind of consumable mtx(skin transfer). I will only spend money on the game if what I get in return is something permanent(or at least until the game servers inevitably shut down in the distant future). I'd be willing to pay a larger, but ONE-TIME sum to permanently unlock 1 private league slot on my account, allowing me to edit it, start it and end it any time I choose. I don't mind having to pay for additional player slots for the league, though.
Duration of the league:
10 days is really not enough time for me to get anything done. 2 months is better, but still too short. I was hoping to be able to do long term leagues, across multiple temporary leagues, giving me time to do SSF, engage with league mechanics, but not lose my progress when the league ends. Essentially like Standard league, but with the mechanics of whichever league is running at the time, and the ability to complete challenges.
Only "challenge" mods, no fun mods:
I don't understand GGG's obsession with the Standard League economy. It's already broken beyond recognition, so why even bother? When I fantasized about custom leagues in the past I thought we'd have the ability to add multiple FUN league mods to our leagues, like permanent Beyond. You could restrict those to be unable to migrate to the temporary leagues to preserve those economies, and just feed them into Standard league which is silly to care about anyway. Hell, you could even prevent migration altogether, essentially making it a Voided league.
"
Philosophically, it's important to us that Private Leagues don't make the game easier. That's what special events like Flashback, Turmoil and Mayhem are for. We'll continue to run special events like these in the future.
Why is that important? I don't see the harm in allowing players to run customized leagues that have their favorite league mods. Flashback, Turmoil and Mayhem are all too short for me to get anything meaningful done before the leagues end.
In summary, I don't think I'll use private leagues in their current form. A lot of the challenging league mechanics you could just do on a regular league using the honor system with your trusted friends if you wanted to anyway.
This is essentially like paying a fee to enter an esports tournament that has no prizes.
Another player assuming he knows who cares about what, or that because they don't care no one cares.
I care. I play both temp and Standard. I like acquiring items and - as you should probably know having given them thousands of dollars - so does Chris Wilson. Foil items and all the things he said around Legacy league proves that point.
That said, I don't want Standard to be completely shit on intentionally. By accident? Ok fine, but intentionally? No.
