Tencent has Invested in Grinding Gear Games

It's generally bad if half the world is owned by only a few companies because then they can change whatever they want after promising they wouldn't and there is nothing you can do about it anymore.

Hope you got really rich off of it or that your kid is safe now because you just put the S from sell-out right in the middle of GGG. Shame. -1.

Agreed.
Ultimately, for me, what it comes down to is whether I trust Chris and his judgement. And I do.

I’m not going to spend 2 minutes reading about Tencent on Google and assume to know more about them than he does. I’m not going to pretend that I know more about the legal documents that have gone in both directions. I’m not going to lecture him on the company he founded.

  • I’m still going to be playing Path of Exile.
  • I’m still going to buy supporter packs as before (approx €1 / hour played).
  • I’m still going to enjoy Eben’s trailers and tell Bex she owes us more memes.

This isn’t what I would’ve chosen - but Chris brought GGG this far, and I’m going to trust him to be more concerned about GGG than we are. Both the entity, and the people working there.

Except both GGG and tencent agreed on specific terms of investment, which most likely include staying independent and no interference :) But w/e guess you just must assume the worse.

You really do not understand how this works. Tencent owns controlling interest now. They can change any agreement, any time they like for any reason or no reason. They are effectively asking themselves if they would like to change their negotiated terms with themselves. And then voting on it with their 80% control of the company.

If any GGG staff try to interfere, they can and will be cut loose the same way you've seen happen almost 100 times in the last 25 years of developer acquisition.

No they can't change any agreement, you are confusing this with some corporation structure control execution, scenarios like in movies aren't the case here...

GGG, is private limited company as such they may have any sort of inside rules like for example:

In order to change the management of the company a majority of 90% is required. Literally tencent could own 80% of stake and have no say on any management decisions. It all depends on company rules and agreements between owners of the company.

And do you believe it would be difficult for Tencent to bump their holding to 90% if they wanted to or if GGG did not listen to their guidance on the game's development?

Just offer a premium on the shares and remaining holders will accept with open arms.

Yeah, if I could go back in time I'd advise myself to spend less money supporting GGG. I feel dirty having sunk money into an independent company - on the basis that they were independent with no other form of income - when that company always intended to sell themselves on.

Can't deny that GGG is only in this position because they made good decisions all the way along. Credit to them for that but man, this news still stings.

im not sure about this..china is in my radar and my country is doing same..risky move..but sure let's try it.. i hope they can fund stabilizers for the servers..
but remember this is a china company..most are in for the business..not really for the game..expansion is their like motto..they fight for their land, and land that they can get..and they're known for hacking..hahaha

and dont do the exilecon in china whatever they give you for it..hahaha..
nz is the homeland so do it first there..ill catch up with my jet..haha

dont get too relaxed and make sure you also keep your eyes at them and can bail out anytime you need to...is this agreement just like garena? if it is..its ok..

but the thing is..as long as chris is poe... win or lose.. i will stay.

You finally sold out?
Were there financial issues that led to this?
If that is he case, why didn't incorporated your selves and let us invest in shares, what would have guaranteed you would keep the majority share.

In short, what is the reasoning behind this? I would really like to know.
