Evasion is SHIT because you can't stack enough Evasion to never get hit at all, and if you ever do get hit you're gonna get one-shotted because Evasion builds NEVER bother stacking some physical mitigation or RNG Dodge-based avoidance under their entropic Evasion value! Besides, if doesn't matter what your evade chance is because the game is specifically programmed to deal 96.74% of whatever your Health happens to be to you every three frames, no matter what your Evasion happens to be, so ONLY instant leech works!
Layered defenses are SHIT because everybody knows that every layer of defense you add, even if it's just a Stibnite flask or a BlasFeeble set-up, removes 500k DPS from your build! Go above three or four layers of defensive mitigation and you go NEGATIVE DPS and start healing enemies instead of killing them! And even then, since the game is specifically programmed to deal 96.74% of whatever your Health happens to be to you every three frames, it doesn't matter what any of your defenses actually are or do because the game will simply break its own rules and modify enemy attacks and stats to do whatever it takes to deal exactly 96.74% of your maximum Health to you every three frames! So ONLY instant leech works!
It's all so simple! All you need to do to understand why the rework of Vaal Pact is going to DESTROY POE FOREVER is realize that the game breaks every single rule of logic, fairness, internal consistency, or common sense you can think of! The only reason we've ever been able to play PoE is because Vaal Picnic bravely fought its way through the twisted, demented basements of GGG's collective development hive mind and forced its way heroically into the game in order to give us all one faint, feeble hope of bringing Light to the eternal low-clearspeed darkness that is Wraeclast! But now that noble, virtuous Keystone has finally faltered...now, the horrible Darkness of having to build intelligently threatens to engulf the game once more...
Why didn't we understand before it was too late?!

Now I can't call myself a good or experienced player, but I can't help but laugh at the fact, that people are saying that defences work and build diversity won't be hurt at all. I agree, that dodge / evasion / armour builds are viable. But one thing - and this is why I'm laughing - has not once been mentioned in that context: ES. You can't get armour and evasion with ES, you can't get acrobatics with ES, you can get block as a Necro and recharge as an occultist. Remind me of how it's possible to play elementalist with the ES nerf AND without Vaal Pact while not simply getting less damage than a berserker with free life and armour EHP. And yes, there may be some exotic viable builds in the future and some for 100ex. But non genius level builds will not work while ranged builds continue offscreening and marauder / duelist builds will be able to Facetank with the new VP.

you guys think its about the attack/spell thing?
They may have considered making it attack or even melee leech only, and then decided to just move it more into the attack zone so that you can still get it as a caster but you need to travel further and incur that cost.
Tbh i think if you are an attack based shadow you are probably going to ranger and duelist starting areas anyway, its only a spell shadow whos looking at that thing now and thinking well.. thats not rly where I wanna be.
Regarding the 1 shots, I think its telling that people complain about that in vp discussions. Its not rly 1 shots, its burst damage, thats why vp is saving you from it. So the argument about evasion is shot because eventually u get hit and you get 1 shot, no, if you have proper defenses you virtually never get 1 shot in maps. Ypu get bursted down and evasion, dodge and block are great against that sort of damage.
You can actually stack evasion with es, I think you can realistically hit about 10k es with 14k evasion with the current items as ci, thats passive, no flasks involved. Someone posted a guardian, obviously its ar+es potential is crazy, without guardian armour and es are a hard stack tho, and unless ur aegis its less rewarding than evasion with es.

Evasion works just fine too for most content. "Eventually you will get hit and you will die"? Only if you're not bothering to manually avoid stuff that is *meant* to one-shot you or burst you down, namely telegraphed hits from bosses and the like or running haphazardly into strong packs/rares. The hits that invetiably get through while clearing aren't generally going to oneshot you, though if you act like a colossal jackass and mash your face into swarms of mobs the multitude of hits that get through because you made no effort to avoid anything could take you down.
7k hp isn't enough? Funny, I've only ever made a build that reached that level once (well, it was 5k hp + 6k ES), and yet I've been able to handle pretty much all content just fine with several melee builds that don't even reach 5k hp (or the occasional trapper/miner that barely reaches 3.5k)
Wow I never knew. I guess I have to start learning to manually dodge chimera. Also manually dodge those hedgehogs. Also gotta start learning to manually dodge full screen glacial cascades. Can't forget about manually dodging projectiles and those things that shoots a dozen spikes in a cone. All these completely and easily dodge-able attacks and here I am wasting my 10% exp thinking that the evasion on my armor is worth something.

Ufff... That balancing Team...
U can live without VP, but so many builds can not.
How are you supposed to handle reflect?
Combined with weird new item mods, it seems that is way to much of a change to be able to be balanced without a serious Beta...
At least uber atziri will be worth farming ^^
And acuity will be back to be the big goal
Lets see, it would be sad, but I didn't plan to play a VP build anyway

Everything besides the smoke phase of chimera is *extremely* easily avoidable for a non-melee, and being that he's a pure phys attacker his namelock-style melee attacks and smoke phase hits are laughably impotent with decent armor/evasion, to say nothing of using a stibnite or other source of blind on him.
Porcupines release their spikes targeted in the direction of the thing that killed them, and don't release spikes if their bodies are destroyed on death. If you're ranged, a little lateral movement after firing whatever skill at them is enough to avoid pretty much every spike. If you're melee abyssal cry (or freeze/shatter, if you can. Or haemophilia/gratuitous violence) will make them not release spikes.
Full screen glacial cascades? When is that an issue outside pvp? There's only a couple gc-using enemies in the game, and their gcs don't hit that hard, nor do they take up a full screen. If you're ranged it's pretty easy to sidestep as you see it coming, if you're not ranged then getting up close ensures it only hits once instead of overlapping.
As for spikes in a cone... idk what the hell you're referring to there. Chimeras and their suppressing-fire barrage? EK ghosts? The former hasn't been an issue for a long time, the latter is indeed a bit overtuned... GGG has this habit of letting incoming physical spells deal just as much pre-resistance damage as incoming elemental ones, as though you're expected to have 75% physical resistance like you do with elemental. So that one I can grant you, but that's an enemy-damage-tuning issue more than a failing in defenses. (That being said, spell dodge works there, as does a more tactical approach than just rushing in headfirst).

I have a Bv pathfinder uberlab runner, 4.8k hp MoM, stibnite, fortify and cwdt ic, +500 ms for uberlab. Layers of defence are real, that character is a lot more tanky than even your fierciest jugger tanks for uberlab. Yes, it has vaal pact, but it is just for saving points, so it won't need to take useless for spells duelist leech just for leech cap. Managed to do shaper and all guardians without much of issue, while almost always facetanking. Btw, with hell bunch of flask nodes hybrid pot recovers about same eHP as leech does, so i don't see a problem with getting VP reworked for this character
